It's disappointing. 6 to 7/10.
Every scene is really well done and (individually) very involving, once you get over the documentary-style camerawork. But there is absolutely nothing new in this movie, nothing really impressive, and it gets boring. It's pretty much flawless, but the structure isn't well developed, and there is no real vision from the director about the question. You cannot base an entire movie on seeing stupid people doing stupid things.

Actually you can.

I re-watched my Criterion blu of this (I'm going through my collection checking for defective discs--there's a scare on--I found one, Summer Hours, but so far everything else is good). I've seen the film once in a cinema, once on DVD, and now twice of Blu, and I gotta say I find this very watchable, compelling even. The interweaving of the 4 stories keeps things interesting; one story at a time would have been dispiriting as hell (witness A Touch of Sin). The evocation of the milieu (filmed on authentic locations, with extras playing themselves) is convincing. And anyway, it isn't all about failure: the tailor wises up and extricates himself from the criminals, as does the young man being mentored in the illicit waste disposal business. And I actually cheer when the annoying wannabe gangsters get killed. All in all I'd say this film is a success; hey, and the director was his own DP!
