Looks pretty cool but the digital projection of the trailer made some shots look very home video-ish chemicals (perhaps brought on from not enough light?). In other words... it looked like shit.

The trailer, as said before, didn't impress me - it seemed rather shoddy and uninteresting. Still, the book was great and the story interests me, so I'm holding out hope it will be good.

Four reviews on IMDB. Two enthusiastic reviews and two negative ones

None of them answers the only question that really interests me: how does Deppsh*t's performance stack up to those classic portrayals by Lawrence Tierney and Warren Oates?

Sidebar: when did this become the Christian Bale decade, and why didn't I get a chance to vote on it? Bale is Batman AND John Connor AND NOW EVEN Melvin Purvis? Next he'll be taking all the Julia Roberts roles as well. He must be stopped.

You're right Jinkies. Next he'll be in the new Superman reboot, then take over Bond from Craig AND be the new Indiana Jones!

Short answer: He won't.

Warren Oates was made for the part (he even looked like the guy!).

P.S. I'm not fond of Bale either so there is no need to guess where I stand on the matter you brought up.

P.M.S. You don't like Depp? Why?

I DO like Dipp, I just think he overworks his schtick, picture to picture.

But on the Film Watch 2009 thread you said it looked "amazing"?

First of all, the trailer only came out a week or so ago, so there's no way I could have seen it until recently. Take a look at the date of my post.

Second of all, learn to read.

Quote
I liked the book and the movie looks awesome based on what I've seen

Which means/meant publicity materials/stills/the cast.

I haven't followed the film until now.
For all I knew the trailer could have been out for months.

Well when somebody says a movie "looks" amazing I think everybody can be lead to believe they've seen the trailer.

Not sure why you're being antagonistic, I didn't write the post to make you sound like a fool.

I was just curious about the change of heart.

Apologize for the tone. However I said nothing about a trailer in the post in which you cite.

Only 6 days until this film comes out! :o Some comments I'll make in the meantime...

I have read the book twice and thought it was excellent, but I know it's a nonfiction book and not a novel so I see no reason to go into depth on that. I believe the movie will be focused on Dillinger and his cohorts and leave out the stuff about Machine Gun Kelly, Bonnie and Clyde, the Barkers, etc. Which is a pity in one sense, but certainly understandable in another.

I was very intrigued when I first heard about this project, though I was leery when I heard who was in it. Still, production stills and promotional materials made me intrigued.

Then I saw the trailer. The trailer is pretty lousy. I'm not talking about the video quality as a lot of people seem to be, I'm talking about content. Looks pretty drab, dull and uninteresting. This definitely makes me leery: How hard is it to make a decent trailer?

I am not sold on the casting. Depp can be a good actor but I'm a bit leery about him as Dillinger; still, he's a better choice than the flavor of the month actors out there otherwise. Speaking of which, I think I've adequately expressed my opinions on Christian Bale; fortunately indications are he won't have as big a role as Depp. Marion Cottiliard is very attractive but I hope she has more than a superfluous love interest part, which the trailer seems to indicate.

I will be seeing this if at all possible (may not be), but I go into it with reservations. Hopefully like Valkyrie and Slumdog Millionaire I will be very pleasantly surprised.

I'm going to have to pop in Dillinger (1973) with Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, Michelle Phillips, Cloris Leachman, Harry Dean Stanton, Geoffrey Lewis, John P. Ryan, and Richard Dreyfuss (quite the cast and will be hard to beat) and have it fresh in my mind to see how it compares.

I'll definitely do a comparison and report it here, anyone should be able to put it on their Netflix queue.

I'll call it now: the majority of this board will hate this film.
