Now back to the subject. Greatest Western? In my opinion, no. It is great but not the greatest

Not only the greatest, but possibly also the most underrated in many circles, particularly the US, until relatively recently. Having said that maybe the underrated accolade should go to "Heaven's Gate" simply by virtue of all the lambasting it receives which is really belied by its high quality.

Most spaghetti westerns reflect a European sensibility and a European subtext that has no awareness of the experience of American pioneers in the western part of the country. Once Upon a Time In the West is one of the few -- and there's only a handful -- of European-made westerns that is even remotely concerned with circumstances and events of the American west. In order to be a western, the story must be connected to how people lived in that time and place. The motivations and behavior must also derive from how people lived in the time and place. Once Upon a Time In the West does this. Therefore, it's a western. It's also beautifully crafted and constructed, a visual and emotional poem of a film, and a superior film by any standards.

Of course it deserves to be preserved and to be honored.

The real tragedy is that Sergio Leone did not continue making American-themed westerns. The 1970s and 1980s were sadly lacking in what Once Upon A Time In the West has got.
