Bleh! Not as good as I remembered it.
Boredom took hold of me after the opening sequence and didn't let go until the final moments where things, finally(!), start getting good.

Fulci focused mostly on the gore and cared little for the suspense/atmosphere/quality.

VERDICT?
Stinky poo poo caca.

3/10

If I am correct this is part of a (loose) trilogy?
Fulci's ZOMBIE TRILOGY?
Which features ZOMBIE, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD and this film?
Or perhaps the trilogy refers to Zombie, Zombie 3 and CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD?
Bah! Who cares? Watch all the others I mentioned but leave House By The Cemetery buried.

Your forgot what is considered his masterpiece, THE BEYOND aka SEVEN DOORS OF DEATH (1981). I remember the trailer for HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY back in the early 80's with its narration by Brother Theodore. THE SHINING seems to have been something of an influence on Fulci when doing this movie. The gore is extreme and it isn't all that bad. I'd give it at least a 6 out of 10. It's low on intelligence, but then, that seems to have been what he was going for as there is surrealism in abundance. The quartet of films have really nothing to do with each other, aside from the presence of zombies...

ZOMBIE (1979)
CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (1980) aka GATES OF HELL
THE BEYOND (1981)
HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY (1981)

Fulci's NEW YORK RIPPER (1982) is probably his most vilified work. Very sleazy, very nasty little movie. The rumor that Fulci despised women is heavily apparent in this seedy and sick puppy of a flick. The AB dvd seemingly has a scene out of order, but the Swedish disc has the film in proper sequence.

Considered by whom?
Everything I've seen from him is far better than this turkey.

Pretty much any and all horror sites. You ask ANY horror fan and speak of Lucio Fulci and most all of them will say that THE BEYOND is his greatest achievement. It's common knowledge amongst serious horror fans. It has been for years.

I was wondering. Re-read the first sentence in the post and I point out THE BEYOND.  Grin
