In facts: "...even the American Western has been taken over with some success by the Germans." (All Talking! All Singing! All Dancing! by John Springer, Citadel Press, 1972, pag. 9 )
Or could he have meant that SW wasn't so successful at "taking over"? Or that it was a genre unto itself?

Your original surmise is probably correct. Kelly stopped watching movies when he stopped making them. His interest in the form (I'm guessing) was only ever professional.

What I actually suspect is that he didn't write the piece at all, but the author himself did, probably after a telephone conversation. I doubt Kelly could have seen german westerns and missed the Leone's, while it is more likely the author did see both and the quote reflected his distaste for the genre or his evaluation of SW as unamerican.
