To tell you the truth I'm a bit disappointed with this movie, I know it's considered a cult one but I never watched it before, and had great expectations (mainly because of listening how good it is from people I know). What to say; I like parts of it, like the ingenious (although a bit predictable) ending, I like the soundtrack, I like the blend between genres and I like the job the actors did (Bob DeNiro has two or three great one-liners). But overall it doesn't quite deliver what I was expecting. How I see it the problem is the middle part, when Harry travels to Louisiana, then the unfocused floating of the plot starts, like they didn't really know what to make it, a full-blown Voodoo flick, or a more detective approach. It gets stuck in the middle. Before the spectator can decide himself the ending rushes in, and BOOM!, everybody's dead, and you get every explanation delivered to ya in 2.5 minutes.

So, it's definitely not bad, but it certainly could have been way better.

(around) 6.5/10

I agree, but the story got diluted and defocused during his wondering through Louisiana.

Just saw it for the first time.
Very good, except for the weird ending. I still agree with Dust Devil about the fact this ending feels rushed.
The visuals are incredible and the actors are amazing. Very good dialogues. One of the best neo-noir.

For me it was always a disappointing film. Like nearly every film from Alan Parker (the poor man's Kubrick)

I watched it a few more times since, and I'd probably raise my rating, but not more than + 0,5.

If this film is a poor man's something, it's the poor man's Chinatown.

Calling Parker a poor man's Kubrick is giving Parker way too much credit. I don't care for this either. I'm a huge Rourke fan but I didn't find this movie memorable in the least. The only thing I even remember is a young Lisa Bonet.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre. What did you think of the script?

Yes, Rourke was great. At that time he was still an incredible actor, before a few years later he transformed in something else.

And Bonet was very naked in a positve way. But this famous sex scene was in the context of the movie also less good than it looked when I saw it as an isolated scene.

I agree noodles_leone the cinematography alone elevates this film.
