The new 10-part HBO series will probably do for the Pacific Theater what Band of Brothers did for the European one. While we're waiting, we can watch the trailer and read this terrific interview with my hero, Cpt. Dale Dye, USMC (Ret.): http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/jrhead/2009/06/30/getting-it-right-with-captain-dale-dye/

Dye is pretty close behind Lee Ermey in the coolness department. He was excellent in Rough Riders, where he got a major role.

This sounds interesting but if it's like Band of Brothers I'll probably end up never watching it.

I've never actually watched a whole episode.

I like Dye as an actor of bit parts ("Chief Ryback? He's top hand in the teams."), but his greater achievement is bringing greater realism to films about combat (and training for same). For example, the idea that groups of actors playing soldiers in a unit should go through a mini bootcamp together, much copied now, was his. There can be no doubt that the basic training sequence in ST is as good as it is because of his input.

No doubt. Certainly his is an admirable mission, to have Hollywood make war films that actually resemble real combat.
