I'm not sure you're supposed to answer with a list. To me the best film of the 70's, despite its many flaws, is Apocalypse Now.

But unfortunately, a bad decade for Westerns. The only 3 great Westerns that I have seen from the 70's are
DYS
,
The Shootist
, and
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
.
Sadly, the Western has been dead for many years. We get the occasional one here or there, but it seems like we'll never again have a time where there will be a steady stream of Westerns
Up to 1976 there were still a lot of great westerns. And dozens of good westerns. So far the last great decade for the genre
It depends on the individual taste, but here are my favourites of the 70s:
1. Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
2. Little Big Man
3. Ulzana's Raid
4. McCabe & Mrs. Miller
5. My Name Is Nobody
6. Bad Company
7. Companeros
8. The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
9. Matalo!
10. There Was a Crooked Man
11. The Missouri Breaks
12. The Shootist
13. Monte Walsh
14. Blindman
15. Kid Blue
and many, many more
7.

For westerns in the 1970s, don't forget Josey Wales.

The Day of the Jackal
Dirty Harry
Duck, You Sucker
The Godfather
The Godfather Part II
Harry and Tonto
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
The Shootist

Also " The man who would be king" needs a shout out, because it did not even make the imdb 250
