One of John Landis' cult comedies from the late 70s / early 80s. Overstuffed silly no-brainer, run by a bunch of wild characters you'll never forget. Often imitated but never matched.

Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

7.25/10

I never really took a strong likiing to this one. The characters just aren't believable on any level.

Karen Allen was a looker in her day though.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre..

I'm a big Belushi fan. Adore him. Badly missed. Jack Black was promising but I'm not so sure anymore.
I just bought the first 4 seasons of Saturday Night Life (then Belushi left the show). 100 hours.
He even played Sam Peckinpah, slapping his actors across the set :)

ANIMAL HOUSE is a pot-movie. Maybe not too funny for people not my age (then again,
my girlfriend is 29 and loves the humor).
Yesterday we saw a contemporary 'drug comedy' PINEAPPLE EXPRESS.
Boy, Landis & his gang had a better hand for this kind of humor. Great stuff.
Only topped by THE BLUES BROTHERS.

Ehm, it is one of JL' big three of comedies, with that I agree, but in my book it takes the third place after Trading Places and The Blues Brothers. :)

First for me...

don't care for Landis' comedies unless you count Amazon Women On The Moon and Kentuckey Fried Movie but even those two titles are hit or miss.

Another horror comedy that isn't very funny but Jinkies insists otherwise.

It's actually a horror with (inconsistent) presence of comic elements, not a real horror-comedy, and not very funny (or at all).

The glance that makes holes in the silver screen

The best gag in this movie was towards the end when the band marches in the dead end alley like a bunch of idiots. Those couple of totally out-of-context seconds made me laugh my head off.* Otherwise the movie was good and entertaining but nothing special after seeing all the copycats.

*Blues Brother has a similar moment, also towards the end, when the FBI men arrive and all they can say is "Hop! Hop! Hop! Hop!..." Brilliant touch O0

Actually I found AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON to be the best combination of horror and humor ever attempted. It struck just the right balance. The humor wasn't so overpowering that the films shock sequences suffered for it. Landis attempted another such hybrid with INNOCENT BLOOD (1992) that one dealing with vampires. It wasn't as successful with the formula as his werewolf classic, imo.

ANIMAL HOUSE was a trendsetting comedy for its time and created a slew of similar comedy flicks dealing with societal outcasts. One of my favorites of these is the raunchy and controversial UP THE ACADEMY (1980). MAD Magazine wanted to get in on a string of comedies akin to National Lampoon, but were ultimately dissatisfied with the film complaining it was too raunchy and salacious. Scenes were cut and pages of script were excised leading to MAD removing their name from the credits (although some video prints retained the name) as well as a couple of appearances of Alfred E. Neuman. Ron Liebman, the scene stealing Major Vaughn Liceman likewise had his name removed. The recent widescreen dvd release contains the MAD opening credit as well as the mascot appearances.

Comedies nowadays are so reliant on flatulence humor to get a laugh it's as if the writers can't be bothered to come up with a string of situations that don't involve loud burping, farting, explosive diarrhea, the consumption of fecal matter or things to do with post coital bodily fluids. Comedies then were much funnier in my opinion. Speaking of Belushi, NEIGHBORS (1980) is one of my favorite comedies. It's not very well liked, but I enjoyed the blackly comical aspects of the film and its borderline horror undertones. The film had an interesting and tumultuous making.
