It's now official: every film CJ likes is a noir. CJ will go down in history as the man who bankrupted the term, and I salute him for it.

Believe it or not many consider Charley Varick a noir, I like it but it doesn't meet my standards, it's not on my list.
I liked Eating Raoul also and it's not a Noir, did either of you see it, BTW???

every film CJ likes is a noir. And CJ's never seen a noir he doesn't like.

if every bleak film is a noir, then about a quarter of all films ever made are noirs.

Anyway, noir or not, this movie is pretty crappy and feels like a missed opportunity for me. The material is pretty good, but the cast (other than Jeff Bridges) is pretty bad. Stacy Keach is mediocre, and Susan Tyrrell's is one of the most annoying characters ever in movie history. How much drunk whining can one viewer take? I give this a 5.5/10. With the right cast and done properly, this material can be made into a good movie. This is not it.

I never said every bleak film is a Noir.

Here again is my take:

"What makes a Noir/Neo Noir is an individual internal factor. It's subjectivity. Noir is in all of us. Think of us all as having an internal tuning fork, these tuning forks are forged by our life experiences which are all unique. When we watch these films their degree of Noir-ness resonates with us differently, so we either "tune" to them or we don't. The amount of "tuning" (I'm appropriating this term from the Neo Noir Dark City (1998)) to certain films will vary between us all also."

This movie is about as good as it can be and Susan Tyrell should have won an Oscar.
