Don't know where its link is........

Dir. Robert Aldrich

(Spoilers)

Here is probably the best, most realistic Cavalry vs Indian flick ever made. All of the usual "Fordian" BS is stripped off and you get a picture of what it must have been like out there at that time in the West you even get an idea of how standard military operating procedures were detailed.

You know you are dealing with a different animal the moment that when a settlers wagon attempts to flee, the pursuing Indians shoot down one of the team immediately halting the wagon, the trooper riding with the mother and son then blows her brains out before doing the same to himself. Nuff said.

One of a trio of great Burt Lancaster Westerns the others being Valdez is Coming, and Lawman, watch them!

Saw the last half hour or so, didn't impress me that much. I might try and give it a complete go someday. COLD!

I have it taped, I'll give it a try. I was planning to watch it sooner or later anyway.

Watched it, finally. Caught it once on TV years ago after I already taped it, somewhere in the middle, and couldn't get into it. But, I have now. This is the sort of brutal and ruthless take-no-prisoners exercise in precision you have to watch it from the very start and swallow every bit if you wanna finish it. Entertainment value equals zero, or less. Authenticity on the other hand probably as high as can go without driving straight into the depths of pathetic moralizing propaganda. Burt Lancaster shines as the curt old cynic McIntosh. He was on a solid roll here, I'll have to rewatch Valdez Is Coming and Lawman as soon as I get the chance. Richard Jaeckel also outstanding in his own calm way. I've heard of various ways people have been tortured and killed but that story about the baby being spiked and left on a cactus to die just seems to climb high amongst the most disgusting atrocities sane people don't even like to think about.

Ain't the best Western I've seen but seems one of the most objective and sincere.

Is this movie on video at all? Netflix doesn't have it. I've seen it crop up on AMC periodically but that's no way to see a movie.

There's a ridiculously expensive OOP US DVD, or you can buy an import:

Well I meant this ain't the kind of movie you watch for fun, at least I don't, to relax after a long day of work. The movie's value obviously lies elsewhere. It is a gritty and staunch W drama that once going builds brick by brick one heavy scene after another. Doesn't fool around or deviate from that plan. No guys telling jokes around the campfire, no funny tunes, no wacky fun. I don't see myself watching it a couple of times a year.

This is insane, 300 bucks for a Region 1 DVD that came out in 1999? - lol, bloody lol.

But if you have a region free DVD player you can get it for less that five bucks. Now that's money well spent.

In Germany we have along version, which is cut together from the American Aldrich cut and the European Lancaster cut.
With the Pal speed-up it runs 112 min and is the best way to see this film.

I hope someday a DVD is made from this version.

The cut shown on TV channels in Germany?

I saw the 1 hour and 40 minutes version, didn't feel anything was missing.

Yes, the version was prepared for a TV showing, but was later also released on VHS. The German DVD contains also the US cut.

The film works in both of the shorter versions, but still the long version is the best.

Netflix has the 103 minute version on streaming video. Worth watching?
