I don't know if there ever was a movie so sad, funny, bitter, sincere, sardonic, and pretty much everything else at the very same time, depicting the life and career of a man that many considered to be only a pitiful little character. It took me awhile to finally get it but I must say it was bloody worth it. I've always liked Philip Baker Hall as a character actor, but never would have dreamed he could carry such a heavy role on his back for 90 minutes. Hail to him, Robert Altman, and the writers.

8.4/10

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre. What did you think of the script?

Secret Honor - 5/10 - Well, you've got a really great Phillip Baker Hall performance - though if you didn't, you'd have no film at all. Otherwise, it's a stilted, cartoonish caricature of Nixon, a man who's a living cariature to begin with. For all their faults and bias, Nixon and Frost/Nixon had something like a credible characterization of the man; this film does little more than show, yet again, that the left has a bizarre fascination with Nixon, whom most other people forgot as soon as convenient. Oh and it's a filmed play which does no good.

Is it a series of monologues, or are there other characters?

Depends if you count the tape recorder as a character.

Ah. I see the trick.

Here's a question. Would the play work if no one watching knew who Nixon was?

A better question is: Does it work if you do know who Nixon was?

That's putting it mildly. Even if you leave considerations of reality to one side, it's only dramatically interesting up to a point.

But our Lord High Moderator enjoys it. Let's see if he has anything to say.

Their Highnesses will definitely have to say some things later on today, they're very busy now.

It'll be much easier if you just say what you'd like me to write. Wink
