I caught many episodes of this over the summer since some Christian TV station showed it constantly. I thought it was pretty cool, very formulaic but fun to watch. The biggest kick is seeing all the Western stars turn up in guest spots - Lee Van Cleef, Royal Dano, Michael Pate, Michael Ansara, Olive Carey, etc.

I recommend the first seasons.
Sam Peckinpah created the show (out of a script that was rejected for GUNSMOKE)
and the first shows he scripted (& partly directed) are very good indeed. They
came close to THE WESTERNER (still the best TV westerns, if you care for quality
and not children entertainment).
Peckinpah also started his stock company with THE RIFLEMAN (Warren Oates,
R.G.Armstrong became regulars, others he would cast again: James Drury, Paul Fix,
Katy Jurado, Dennis Hopper).

Peckinpah left the show when his concept for letting the boy 'grow up'
was rejected. He went on to create THE WESTERNER which thanks to Brian Keith
then led to THE DEADLY COMPANIONS & RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY.
