Certainly not a perfect movie but an interesting and original attempt of investigation of the early relations between the Europeans and Native Americans. I can't say everything really happened that way, it wouldn't be fair - what and how the Hell would I know anyway? But this seems believable, to a certain point anyway. The movie sometimes misses or misuses its own dramatic potential, focusing too much on small episodes for the whole picture to be well encircled and compact, both in form and substance. But, like I said, the originality compensates this.

(By no means this is a Western, but it occasionally resembles one, and thus has more right to be in this section than some of the other schlock for whatever reason posted and found here.)

somewhere between 7 and 7.5 out of 10 (7.2 on IMDb seems about right)

I like this film; but then, I like most everything Beresford has done.

That's what you get, Drink, for being such an annoying Melville fanboy.

I watched this in Colonial US History freshman year. I remember liking it but not a lot of detail. I'm pretty sure there's a thread already.

A lot of the details are straight out of the historical Jesuit Relations.  Afro

I like this film; but then, I like most everything Beresford has done.

Driving Miss Daisy is an old personal favorite of mine, however artificial and flawed it objectively is. Saw 'Breaker' Morant once a long time ago and liked it, will have to re-watch it sometime. Tender Mercies and And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself sound interesting (I'll probably find them sooner or later), the rest not so much.

I'd forgotten Beresford did the Pancho Villa movie. It's pretty good if memory serves. And Breaker Morant is excellent.
