I'll probably be seeing this in the near-future. I'll need something to keep me busy at Pitt this summer.

My first impression:
Quote
Iron Man 2 (2010) - 8/10. You can't cast a film with Downey, Sam Rockwell, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, and Gary Shandling (as a sleazy Senator) and have a bad movie. You can't, because those actors don't work in bad movies. If they're in the film it's because they've read and approved the script. And the script for IM2 is good (don't let anyone tell you differently). It's not going to win an Oscar, but it's efficient, it moves a lot of characters around, gives those characters depth, and delivers tons of humor. Some of the gags are for insiders only (I doubt Groggy is going to note Stan Lee's amusing cameo, for example) but there are still plenty of laughs for the hoi poloi. There isn't a lot of action, and what there is suffers from the standard fake look of CGI (although in one sequence, the race in Monaco, Favreau does the car collisions in slo-mo, and that added bit of manipulation made the CGI work for me).  The worst thing about the first film was the rock-em-sock-em-robot finale, and IM2's climax improves on that (although the action remains a little hard to follow at times). You can nit-pick problems in it (e.g. Scarlett Johansson is too short to play Black Widow), but on balance, I'd say the sequel improves on the original. And hey, with this one you get both an AC/DC intro AND an outro!
I saw the film in IMAX, digitally projected, and I'd recommend that everyone who takes their film viewing seriously do the same. Otherwise, stay at home and wait for the Blu-ray.

NB:I don't know if the third installment will be in 3D, but the rumor is starting HERE.

I decided to see this instead of that Russell Crowe thing. Just got back, let's try a Groggy Capsule Review:

My immediate gut reaction: the best superhero movie ever. I wasn't a big fan of the original, which was a Robert Downey Jr. away from being a bland and dull action flick. But the sequel definitely delivered, topping the original in plot, characters, and action. There wasn't a moment that I felt was unnecessary or boring, which is what I primarily require from a popcorn flick. And it's nice to see that a) most of the creative energy went into plot and characters, not shoving hamfisted messages down the audience's throat, b) the movie was a lean 125 minutes including credits, not overstaying its welcome for a minute. Downey was excellent, having a lot more to work with than in the original; Scarlet Johansson was hot as hell; Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell made great villains. All in all, it was about as good as this sort of film can get, and you really can't ask for more than that. Good call Jinkies. Afro
