Just heard that Western regular Aldo Sambrell has died in Alicane, aged 79. A memorable face and a splendid long career, with Leone and without, with a surprising writer/co-producer credit.

A shame. 79 is too young.

I heard this news yesterday from the spaghetti cinema blog. Apparently, he'd been sick for a while. I posted my own mini write up on the man and his movies from westerns to fantasy films. There's also a link to the piece from spaghetti cinema which has some interesting things to say about the man...

I'm trying to come up with something meaningful to say, and I can't. :-\ Sad news.

There are two kinds of films in this world:those which stay, even when their genre is forgotten, and those which don't.

Besides his Spaghetti roles, it was fun to see him occasionally turn in up in Hollywood/international productions. In Doctor Zhivago he played at least two different characters. And he had a pretty big part (by his standards) in The Wind and the Lion as Sean Connery's chief sidekick. He also turned up in Hannie Caulder and Lost Command.

You got that right. Once you link names to those dirty faces that appeared in countless SWs you forget them never again, and you're happy as a little child when you recognize them somewhere else. O0

I remember the first time I went to Shobary's website and saw the gallery of actors. I hadn't really thought about who was who up 'till then, but everything clicked once I saw that page.
