By now I have watched this movie countless times, and it never lost any of its brilliance. Every segment is very detailed and carefully planned, and you can feel this is a product of love and dedication.

8.5/10

Saw about twenty minutes of it before my rented disc crapped out.

I'm not Dust Devil, but you are right the book was far far better.

Oh sorry, those Tuco avatars ...

I think the film is a catastrophe compared to the book. The reverse King Midas.

Have you read the book?

No, I haven't read the whole book, but I did listen to parts of it being read in high school by my professor. Having watched the movie at least 10 times before that I wisely decided it wasn't a particularly smart idea. However, all along I've had no doubt the book is way more complex and interesting. The already mentioned professor shared my opinion: he said the book is a must read, while the movie is an excellent crime-thriller and - although it falls short compared to the original - it should be seen at least as a vizualisation of the dark Middle Ages. The problem is that I rarely listen to other people's advices, so I never read it.

The movie is excellent despite that, unfortunately in the second half the great mystery atmosphere is somewhat silenced by the arrival of Bernardo Gui and his (Un)Holy Inquisition gang, but there are numerous other compensations to this.
