I'd like to ask the Maestro why he did put it in the original score at all. Was it just an appendage? Or, like I think, one of the 2-3 basic elements of the tune?

certain instruments have more distinctive personalities than others.
these are used, generally, as spice.
not the main meal.
these elements were the strength of the dollar soundtracks.

This is all the more annoying considering how he was jelous of his orchestrations, never allowing them to be published.

bear in mind that the dollar movies were done on a very strict budget.
i wonder what Morricone got for Fistfull.
prolly a case of wine. lol.
he would have made lotz up from "found sounds"
eg = the whistler lead the choir as well.
i just think it all - the style - stuck when the movie became a huge success, so he carried on to the next ones.
i'd do the same, even now, titoli.
Morricone music always sounds better to me with the muso he gets to do the soundtrack, not the orchestras he uses on tours.
