Anyway, what do I think of Cowboys And Aliens?
It looked pretty good up until the Aliens showed up.

Exactly what I thought (although they should remove that hat on James Bond and fin him another one, it really looks ridiculous on his head).
Concerning mixing the genres, it's not the fact that they do it that is surprizing, it's the fact that they do it in such a kitsch way. Their could have been thousands of other titles for the movie that could have worked perfectly without sounding like one of these z movies from the past (billy the kid vs dracula). To me, it sounds like they're trying to sell it (with that title) as a rodriguez-like Grindhouse movie, but when you look at the trailers, it looks uterly serious. Same thing happened with Snakes In A Plane.

Mixing Westerns with things that belong to other genres and stories has been done since the dawn of Western (movies) cinema and extraterrestrials are no strangers to Frontier towns (The Aurora Encounter).

For good examples of hybrids one doesn't need to look further than Mexico's cowboy film output throughout the 50's and early 60's.
Those films have gunslingers going up against mummies, zombies, skeletons, vampires etc.

Americans put out a few too. Most notably Valley Of Gwanji where Cowboys wrangle up some Dinosaurs!

And if you want to go back further many programmers of the 20's and 30's featured many bizarre/supernatural things in their 50 minute run time.

Perhaps the first example of another genre being mixed with a Western dates back to 1913 (The Werewolf).
Good overview, but I'm surprised you didn't mention Billy the Kid vs. Dracula. Man, they really made a lot of these things.

Dozens, if not hundreds coming out of Mexico alone.
I didn't mention Billy The Kid vs. Dracula or Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter because those are the ones people remember.
Plus, The Valley of Gwangi is a much more notable entry in America's additions to the sub-genre.

If it's a choice between this and that Cowboys and Ninjas movie (The Warrior's Way?)... I'll see True Grit.

I saw The Warrior's Gay just today.
A suitable East Meets West movie with some fun ideas (A shootout on a Ferris Wheel).
The opening in Japan is perfectly fine but when the action moves out West it gets a little boring until these rough riders from Hell show up!
After that you can relax as you'll be properly entertained.

The TV spot during the Super Bowl yesterday confirmed my suspicions: it will suck.

I'm sure Jinkies will go see it.

You may be right on both points. But let's wait for the reviews, shall we?

Sure, but you do see the value of second source confirmation, don't you?
