OK, it's obvious (given my post count) that I'm a newb and asking questions that have probably been answered before but I've done a search and can't find any info.

Here's an "easy" one for you guys...what the heck is going on in this still?

I know it's after leaving the prison camp and before AE's gang joins them (minus 1) near the river bank. I always found this still a little disturbing since AE's body language and facial expression are so uncharacteristic.

What does he have in his hands and clutched under his arm pit? What's up with the constipated look?

I recall a thread where Jordan Krug mentioned a bread/knife scene depicted in a lobby card? It's not this scene, is it? I don't see a knife and that doesn't look like bread to me.

Hmmmm actually i think it DOES look like bread, albeit unlevened.
Maybe some sort of midwestern chapati....

To be honest, its been years since I saw GBU so I'd have to check it out again.

As for the constipated look?
Stick with naan bread Lee!

This picture's come up before. I don't know if we ever figured out what it was.

Is this part of an actual (presumably deleted) scene? A publicity still? Perhaps just a candid of Lee and Clint goofing off?

I think we figured it was them eating a snack during a break in shooting.

That's what I thought. It seems odd that they'd use to advertise the film but stranger things have happened.

Thanks for clarifying.

I just searched the terms "bread" and "knife" and 2 more threads popped up that state the still above is, in fact, the "bread-knife" scene. I'm more inclined to believe this is the extended negotiation between AE and Blondie (i.e. it's a deleted scene) depicted in Millard's novel rather than a shooting break, but that's just me.

They're eating Stevens' home-made bread.

I tell you what can make a published photo look really odd, it's the fact that it's been printed back to front.
An example is the '97 re-release of the Hendrix BBC Sessions CD. It made Mitch look really bizarre.

I put forward to you gentlemen that this photo is back to front and it makes LVC look 'odd'. I think I can prove this too.
Clint is wearing the same overcoat that he wears in the scene where he and Tuco awake in the morning after the battle at the river and I have just checked my DVD and yes he is wearing the same hat too.
The difference however is that the metal buckle ( or whatever it is called) on the strap around the top of Clint's hat is on the left side of his head in the film and on the the right in this publicity still.

I feel quite pleased with myself for this and although it does nothing to help with the actual question it does offer some food for thought!

Interestingly I notice that when Clint is shooting the canon at Tuco a few scenes on, he is wearing a different hat again. This probably happened throughout the film if you bother to check but I haven't to be honest.

I personally think that the photo is from between shooting scenes and is just them messing about.

This is a cut scene and occurs after they have left the prison camp and before the night (5 is a lucky number) scene. I beleive it will be covered in Peter Hanleys book on GBU. I think its wine and either bread or meat.
The hat is the one Van Cleef gives to Blondie in the prison camp. Its the same as he wears in the Dollars films. Blondie has three hats in the film. The one at the start - lighter colour with wide brim. Confed one and this one which he wears for the rest of the film.
Yes the still is reversed on this lobby card.  Smiley
