I don't recall ever hearing Frayling mention a word about this.

I do recall him saying in STDWD that there was a theater somewhere, I forget which city in Italy, that somehow had very successful screenings of the movie, and that seems to have been a prime factor in the movie being successful. But re-editing? Re-scoring? I never remember hearing about that.

There is that old quote from Eastwood about the first version he saw being "absolute mayhem" or something to that effect. This was discussed a bit in the "ur-version" thread on this forum. I had pasted the quotes from Eastwood there but the pics have disappeared thanks to imageshack going bust. I can try to dig them out again.

He's clearly misremembering the details. It's well known that Leone was not originally interested in having Morricone score the fllm and had originally wanted Angelo Francesco Lavagnino instead who had previously worked on "The Colossus of Rhodes". However, the score was in the end done by Morricone from the outset. The Italian Wikipedia article pretty informative in this regard:
