Title: Dangermouse & Daniele Luppi - 'Rome' (Audio CD)
Post by: Kurug3n on May 16, 2011, 07:34:06 PM
"Rome, a long gestating collaboration between producer Brian Joseph Burton (aka Danger Mouse) and Italian composer Daniele Luppi, pays tribute to Italian cinema's Spaghetti Western era with the subtlety of a revolver to the forehead. Lovingly detailed, atmospheric and oozing the Technicolor glow of a smoke-stained, seventies movie screen, Rome is awfully hard not to cheer for, even when it's stuck on autopilot, as rarely do pet projects feel this alive and sumptuous. Burton and Luppi were wise to bring on Jack White and Norah Jones to flesh things out, as their vocal contributions provide a much needed break from the immaculate, yet familiar melodies. Jones, with her smoky timbre and laid-back delivery brings a cool confidence to standout cuts like "Season's Trees" and "Black", while White, who spent countless hours driving around and listening to the instrumental mixes, while bouncing ideas into a hand-held tape recorder, manages to make songs like "Two Against One" and "World", the latter of which features a knockout octave vocal, feel as sinister as their intentions. Rome's instrumental bits feel nearly interchangeable with their MorriconeTarantino counterparts, but there's a joyful lawlessness to the whole affair that makes it feel less like a lark and more like a fever dream come to unlikely fruition"-ughh item summary

Anyone heard about this project? Here's the wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome_%28album%29) page for some info.

Saw this looking over the catalog of stuff coming out and it peaked my interest. I've only listened to the track Black (http://youtu.be/l3yAx2uCoHs) with Nora Jones and I can dig it.

I caught an interview with the duo which played a ton of sound clips, sounds promising.

Thought this thread was worth a bump. Maybe as a younger member I'm more disposed to like it, but I will say that I have a love hate experience with most of Danger Mouse's work. He's produced some dope tracks, but has often paired up with artists I don't care for. Rome, however, was great all the way through. A great tribute to Morricone, fantastic performances by Jack White and Norah Jones. I can listen to it start to finish.

On this note, has any one heard the Morricone remixes? There's one I like of L'Estasi Dell'Oro. I think it was used in Nike commercial several years ago. A good work out song for the Spaghetti Western fan!
