Hmm, I did see it last summer when Film Forum did their Italian Westerns program, and I remember being disappointed with it. Although, it could have been the quality of the print I was unhappy with. Maybe I should try this again on the German DVD--or should I wait for the (inevitable) Blu-ray?

Given the fact it has all those allusions in it, I suggest you get yourself a copy of each release. :D
