What is Sad Hill Unearthed?
Sad Hill Unearthed is a full length documentary about the amazing story behind one of the most important locations in film history. We explore the dreams and motivations behind the fans but also the transformation of art, music and film in a substitute for religion.
In 1966 the Spanish Army built a huge cemetery with over 5000 graves at Mirandilla Valley in Burgos for the final sequence in the film "The Good the Bad and the Ugly". After the shooting, the whole place was left behind and for 49 years, nature covered every tomb.
In October 2015 a group of film fans decided to start digging... and under 3 inches of ground they found the original paved circle. For months, people from all around Europe travelled to Sad Hill to unearth and rebuild the place. We have been filming the process... even before they started!

Great work O0
Nice to see that James Hetfield (Metallica's lead singer and rhythm guitarist) is interviewed and Kirk Hammett (Metallica's lead guitarist) has a grave! I'll be seeing them tomorrow night >:D
-
Wow, sounds amazing!
Enjoy the show drinkanddestroy. I saw them a long time ago in '96 at The Monsters of Rock O0

I'd like to contribute, but the perks are making it hard to decide on the right level. I want the poster, the DVD, the grave marker, the digital book. I don't care about credit or the GBU blu (unless they provide the new one from KL). The Madrid premier might be fun, but since there's no way to know when that will happen, it's hard to plan for that (too bad it probably won't happen until next year: I just found a great Business Class fare for August 2017 for 1K!). Huh. This will require more pondering . . .
-
Very excited about this project and made a contribution. Thanks for letting us know!
-
OK, I pulled the trigger also. Getting the DVD, the grave marker, the poster, AND the T-shirt. I hope after all that there's enough money left in my contribution to go toward the project!
-
It's gonna be great having a marker with "Dave Jenkins" painted on it. Archeologists some day may see it and be confused--"Dave Jenkins at Sad Hill? Does that mean Frank served in the Civil War? Who knew that GBU and OUATITW inhabited the same cinematic universe? A copy of the SL Encyclopedia would sure be helpful now!"

I will get my grave anyway, without it, it would be a total fake ...

When this thread was begun, donations were at 10% of the goal. They are now at 55%. This board could make the difference. C'mon titoli, you cheap bastard, drop something in the hat.

As far as I am concerned, I just forked out € 110,00 + € 10,00 for shipment to Italy. But I'm a bit worried, since I want my name AND date of birth written on the cross, but there was no field in the order form where I could insert the details for the cross inscription... :( :( :( So maybe my cross will be the Unknown one???

They are showing 59% of their goal now.
One of the things you get as a donor is access to the names of all the other donors and the amounts given. I check it every now and then to see who on this board hasn't given. I'm making a list.

Thanks D.J: contacted them twice and got replies within a few hours. The cross inscription issue has been fixed, so I won't be the Unknown next to Arch Stanton :( :( :( :( Also I asked about the release date and shipment date of the DVD. They replied saying that the T-Shirt and poster will be sent as soon as the campaign is finished (end of June 2017), whereas the DVD will be ready for shipment in spring 2018.

Yeah, only backers have access to the backers list. But you are on it, CJ. And I know how much you gave. O0 Mr. Hanley gave a whopping 210 Euros (book sales must be pretty good).

No, I had to go to bed. 110% was the final tally.
I like the idea of applying that extra 10% to beverages. I'm also thinking maybe I should go to Burgos some time and find my "grave." I could probably go at Thanksgiving time . . . hmmm . . . .

I got an email from Luisa Cowell:
Dear Sad Hill Unearthed Fan,
As you know, a grave with your name at Sad Hill cemetery is included in your perks. If you haven't already done so, please send us your year of birth if you'd like this to appear next to your name. Also please let us know if you'd like to have a name different to yours.
You will also appear in the credits of the film, please kindly let us know the name you'd like to use if it is different from the name you already registered in the campaign. Please note only names of persons are allowed on this one, not company names.
As you may know we successfully closed the crowdfunding campaign this morning reaching 110% of the target, so we would like to thank you again for your contribution. You made it possible!
Should we have our anachronistic 20th century birth dates in a 19th century cemetery? or just have them use say 1862 minus our current age?
What say you?
-
I just received the email and was wondering the same. 1862 minus our current age sounds like the best solution.
-
I just told them not to put any date.
-
I was just listening to the BBC World Service where they were talking about this and speaking with some of the people. It's getting some great media attention.
-

Wow !
Next reconstruction should be the arch from Once Upon a Time in the West.
-
Just got word:
Next week we will start delivering some of the perks and two days ago we started placing graves with your names at Sad Hill. The process is taking longer than expected, so please be patient. We will start sending pictures very soon. You can reach at info@zapruderpictures.com for any questions you might have.
Thanks so much for you support!

For the ones before this one I went to Imgur, this one is just a direct link to the Facebook image.

I received a movie poster in the mail today. The image is an earth-colored picture of Eastwood; look closely and you’ll see that it is actually comprised of the graves and shrubbery of Sad Hill.
On back is an autograph from the filmmaker, with a note, “Thank you for making it happen!”

I think you get everything successively, the lowest contribution gets the first thing, the next tier gets that and something else, and so on and so forth, at least that is how I understood it.

If I recall correctly, my package was 50 euros. No grave.

Dear Sad Hill Unearthed fans,
Over the past weeks we have been busy sending you the poster / poster + t-shirt by post. We hope you receive it soon!
For those with t-shirts please be careful when you open the package to make sure the poster is not damaged, we recommend that you take out the t-shirt first.
We know some of you are still missing your grave, in the coming days we will be able to send your picture, please bear with us for some more days.
Please note the OST and the DVD of the documentary will not be available until we release the documentary to the public later in 2018. We will keep you informed of the progress!
Please follow us on social media and remember to publish your pic with your t-shirt / poster with the hashtag #sadhillunearthed.
Best
Luisa

You were born in 1831? In that case, you should have seen a lot more films by now.

There were no films back then. But real life was thrilling.

No, but you would have been in the perfect position, once 1894 arrived, to see everything as it came out. No one should have seen more films than you.

Are you kidding? I was already an old fart by then, telling everyone and their mother that these moving photographs were a just a stupid fad.

Hi all,
this summer joined the crowd funding for the documentary Sad Hill Unearthed. I selected the option with a (photo of a) marked grave at Sad Hill (among other things).
I did get my poster, and I did get an email telling me about a delay in sending out the digital picture of my grave marker, but so far I haven't received the actual photo.
Anybody up to date on the status of this?

You have the right to two things (i) a digital download of the OST and (ii) DVD with the film. This is the first one, the digital download of the OST. You will receive the DVD once is done, most likely end of 2018 / beginning of 2019.

message today from Sad Hill Unearthed crew:
Dear friends
In case you haven’t heard, Sad Hill Unearthed is now available worldwide in Netflix (as well as in other platforms in Spain).
The DVD for those who have this perk was distributed in Spain last week for the Spanish fans. The international version is still under production and will be delivered in January-February 2019. I will let you know.
As you may know, we have been nominated to Best Documentary in the Spanish Academy Awards (Goya Awards), also nominated to Best Documentary in the Forqué Awards and we have been awarded Best Film New Visions in Sitges Film Festival.
Please recommend us to your friends! Mouth to mouth is essential!
Thanks again for all your support
Luisa

I'm gonna tell my wife that "mouth to mouth is essential." She needs to hear these verities from time to time.

I just finished watching "Sad Hill Unearthed" on NetFlix. Fans of Sergio Leone will adore it. The Spanish guys who spearheaded the efforts were true fans, and some had relatives who had actually worked on the film.
Too bad Eastwood couldn't make it to Spain in person for the July 2016 dedication, but he did send a video.
I think it's time that we Americans do a similar restoration of the arch in Monument Valley used in "Once Upon a Time in the West". I've been to that location, and that would be tons easier to restore than the Sad Hill Cemetery was.
-
I just finished watching the doc on Netflix and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As a die hard fan I really admire their passion, dedication and perseverance. Above all Clint Eastwood's video message made it all worth it for them.
Of course they couldn't have done it alone. All the volunteers should be proud of their hard work. I'm also thankful to those who donated to the cause from around the world for making this happen.
Great to see our fellow member, Peter C. Hanley (aka username Hanley/Clinton) contribute to the doc.

I wonder if you approach the Navajo Tribe with a proposal for the restoration. Fort Apache was shot at Gouldings.
Harmonica was a half breed could make the case that he was Mexican/Navajo, no? An extra attraction to bring in more tourist dollars to the tribe. Maybe we could even get Goulding's involved.
Worth a shot, follow Sad Hill Unearthed's playbook.

Wonderful film about a bunch of id..idi..idiots ; as obsessed as I am!

Any chance of uploading the documentary on youtube?
This cheapskate doesn't believe in subscribing to things that take much longer to terminate your contract, than signing up to netflix just to watch one show

Maybe we could even get Goulding's involved.
On my trip to the arch (yes I blared the film score music while there) we did stop at Gouldings; in their gift shop there were numerous books about films shot in Monument Valley, and NOT ONE even mentioned Once Upon a Time in the West. I looked through the indexes for "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "Sergio Leone".

It is really gratifying to see that so many fans of the film are young!
I guess no matter which version they watch, no matter what language, the greatness shines through!

To restore the arch would surely not cost too much and I cannot see why the Navajo Tribe shouldn't give the permission to go ahead. Unfortunately I live in Italy, but some of our friends in USA could maybe sound them out??? As I already did with Sad Hill Unearthed, I promise I will contribute financially once we get permission. I'm pretty sure if only 30% of the board's members contribute, we can cover all costs easily . C'mon American friends (C.J., Dave, Drink etc.): get the ball rolling!!!

I doubt money will be an issue; it’s finding people to do the job. Most of the SLWBers in America are probably in the New York area, which is 2300 miles (3700 km) from Monument Valley.
Cusser lives in Arizona ...

I'm 5 hours away by driving, 336 miles. And likely the closest.
I'm retired now, but would participate. To rebuild the fallen center section in rock, would need some kind of construction engineer. I don't know where the red stones were obtained from, but the near vicinity does not have any; I believe that the center section was wood/styrofoam. You can see that there are no fallen stones in the center. Looks like some of the arch is hand-made bricks, some just stones.

You're from Arizona, I've never seen a real adobe anything. I figured if anybody'd know it would be you, no?

For those of you who are entitled to receive the DVD of the documentary "Sad Hill unearthed", I have some good news...
I wrote to Luisa Cowell asking when we may expect the DVD and I got following reply:
Hi Leonardo, gladly I sent all yesterday, they come by ordinary post so it will take a couple of weeks I suppose.
Luisa
so just be patient for another 10-15 days... 8) 8)

I had some problem watching it on my PC: the image kept freezing and I had to restart several times. I finally switched to my regular player at home and had no trouble.

Sad Hill Unearthed (2018) - 8/10. Cultists for a weird movie-religion prepare a sacred site for an arcane ritual while talking heads comment. Not sure why the Metallica guy gets so much screen time, but maybe it's because he gave the filmmakers free use of one of his songs for the end titles. The film is nicely photographed, but there are maybe a few too many moving camera shots--you really notice them, too, when they jump from a static-shot interview clip to one where someone is digging up the ground while the camera operator decides to take a stroll. I was glad to see Leone-related personalities weighing in; I had never seen or heard Peter Hanley before, and it was interesting to see what he's like. My favorite moment, though, was the archival clip of Leone explaining the plot of GBU while devouring a bowl of pasta. That's entertainment!

Did they ever find a rogue confederate coin lying around at the restoration location?

Where is the stone Blondie pretended to write on?
