Title: Poll: which movie site would you like to visit???
Post by: geoman-1 on July 09, 2006, 04:02:45 PM
Question. ..If the opportunity arose, which film site would you like to visit? This would include ANY favorite movie (not necessarily a S.W.).  My top 5:

1) The road where Juan first shoots out John's motorcycle
tires in DYS.
2) The Irish pub in DYS.
3) Monument Valley (OUATITW)
4) The hillside overlooking the blown bridge (DYS) (whereupon I would proceed to play Morricone's soundtrack, full volume no less, with violins and all ...totally surreal!! 8) 8)
5) The castle road where the first flashback scene takes place (DYS)

1. The Irish pub, for sure DYS
2. Sweetwater site as an hommage to OUATITW
3. I'd attend the concert at the blown bridge DYS
4. Monument valley OUATTW

I think i'll pop in my tape of DYS tonight ;).

Basically all of the spaghetti locations and Monument Valley for the Ford sights and what's left of the arch.

One of my favorite places to visit was John Wayne's Alamo Village in Bracketville, Texas.  Definitely one of the coolest sets ever.  You really get the sense of how big the Alamo was, and Wayne's set was only 3/4 the size of the real one.

And I'd like to travel to Mexico, the Durango area, to see all the locations from Peckinpah movies, WB, Major Dundee, and the Duke shot some good movies down there too.

I'm sure you're all shocked to hear my first choice . . .

Monument Valley
"Sad Hill Cemetary" from GBU
Almeria

And since the Original Poster said ANY movie site, I'd also pick:

Any of the deserts where they filmed Lawrence of Arabia
I dunno . . . some of the places in the Phillippines where they filmed Apocalypse Now . . . not sure how safe it is there though . . .

already been to Monument Valley some time ago.
I'll go back eventually but at the moment I would rather visit either the Cemetery in GBU or the Bridge sequence from DYS.

GBU cemetery, Almeria - for sure. And also others from Leone's films, except desert... but maybe even it.
Other film sites... That Scottish village where Local Hero was shot and where they had to built phone box shown in the film.  :D I don't remember the name of the village now.  ???
And maybe some sites from Seventh Seal by Bergmann... I don't dig Bergmann, I only liked Seventh Seal and the scenery in it.

Sad hill cemetary
Mc Bain Ranchhouse...

not to stray too much off the subject, but I'd love to
see:

Warner bros. Western set.(I think it exists)
Columbia western set...(don't know if it's still up)
Universal set...(which you can see parts in their tour)
I know every damn part of these sets, from watching
all the movies and tv shows... it's like old homes
I've never been to.

I think Columbia has sold it's backlot and uses another site for filming. I would also love to see the Western sets.

1. Almeria
2. Sad Hill (There's no more graveyard left, but I believe Don Bruce once showed us the site.)
3. Monument Valley (I've been there once but I'm dying to go back!)
4. Medinaceli (where Banco de Mesa Verde was)
5. McBain Ranch

Come to think of it...I really want to check out the Pub in Dublin (DYS flashback sequences).
One of the features of my UK DYS DVD includes video of original  film location sites and compares them to the film
sequences. The Irish Pub has not changed much over the years.
I had to buy a multi-region DVD Player to watch the film but it was definitely worth it  (I didn't realize my US DVD player would not play the Region 2 DVD when I puchased the UK film). The film is shown in its entirety with the full length flashback scenes.
Some of the comparative sites include:

Blown Bridge
Irish Pub
Mesa Verde Bank
Canyon  (where John first meets Juan)
Executions Sites (including the rainy night sequence)
Mountain where John and Juan have lunch
...and several more 8)

I'm doing the same for my birthday. I'm getting sick and tired of being hampered by regions. If I want to watch a DVD from Europe I should be able to!

The region code system is a Berlin wall of the movie world. Movies are culture to be shared among people on this planet. Whoever made this horrible system don't care about that.

I've just realised that that Spanish friend of mine has a relative or friend near those sites, where most of SW were filmed... Oh dear. I want to go there!
Those comparison photos look very good. Make me want to see it in person.
I also don't like all those regions. Fortunatelly we watch DVD's on computer, but still we had problems with it. It only makes one not to buy a DVD he would buy if he could watch it without problems!

I am heartened to know that many of the S.L. film sites have changed little over the past 40 years. Let's hope they remain in their pristine state for many years to come!! 8)

I'd be more worried about safety with the LoA sites, inasmuch as many of them are in Jordan.  I mean I'm not going to go into the Middle East to sightsee unless I can be sure nothing major goes wrong. . . had a friend whose cousin just barely got out of Syria during the latest Israeli-Lebanon conflict.  They got out on a road that was bombed like ten minutes after they left Damascus. . .  :o

Do you know a SW place near Madrid?

Quite a few scattered around the Madrid area such as Hoyo de Manzanares (Fistful of Dollars town location). Manzanares el Real (Rocks where Blondie first meets Tuco) and Aldea del Fresno (Fistful of Dollars river).

Medinaceli (Mesa Verdi) is a little North, but on the way to the Burgos region (~250 km) where you can see Sad Hill, the GBU bridge battle location and the GBU POW camp. The area around Burgos is a really beautiful part of Spain and very different to Almeria (medieval towns rather than whitewashed villages).

My favouroite SW location is Cortijo Del Fraile (Cabo De Gata) which was the GBU mission exterior. (scenes from FAFDM filmed there as well). Unforunately as each year passes it's condition deteriorates. It's an historic building beyond is use in numerous SWs and I hope something is done before its too late.

Mesa Verdi is actually a whole hotchpotch of different locations.

When Juan leaves the railroad station, that's Almeria station. The next shot from behind Juan is of Guadix. The firing squad wall is also in Guadix.

The bank scenes were filmed in Medinaceli, near Madrid. The bank itself is not a real building - built for the movie only.

Oh I must've gotten confused. The station is Almeria but the city is Guadix.

Guadix station is also a SW location - it was used in Quien Sabe? (A Bullet for the General). There's a loco shed a little way from the station that houses the steam engine used for the film.

BTW Peacemaker, talking of steam engines, I really enjoyed the opening scenes of your movie. Great work.

If you ever want to visit the railroad ( do it in summer when the Amish countryside is a lush green ) it's located near Lancaster Pennsylvania, only an hour west of Philadelphia.

Almeria.
Tunisia, where they filmed Tatooine.
I know it's not a movie, but wherever they filmed the soup kitchen in "The Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld.
Ceylon, where The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed.
Toronto.
