Title: The dub job on A Fistful Of Dollars?
Post by: riotengine on October 01, 2009, 10:52:17 PM
I've read that Peter Fernandez (Speed Racer) supervised the dubbing on the "Dollars" trilogy. Does anyone know if Fernandez dubbed Don Miguel Rojo? He tended to work with the same crew on various projects in the 60s (Corinne Orr, Jack Curtis, Jack Grimes).

Greg :)

As a childhood Speed Racer fan, I instantly recognized Don Miguel's English dubbed voice as being Peter Fernandez.

Who voiced Ramon for this film?

Grant, Bernard. Voice actor who dubbed Volonte in English-language versions of FOD and FAFDM, the Union Captain in GBU, and Morton in OUATITW.

I thought, from this board, those four were voiced by Paul Frees.

Originally that is what we thought too,  until we found Bernard Grant's obit in the New York Times & in some type of voice actor's hall of fame.

So just who did Paul Frees voice in these films, or is that info incorrect too?

Don't know, but here is Grant's filmography on Voice Chasers: http://voicechasers.com/database/showactor.php?actorid=7284

and here is Paul Frees filmography:http://voicechasers.com/database/showactor.php?actorid=1248 (http://voicechasers.com/database/showactor.php?actorid=1248) (mostly cartoon characters)

According to Sir Christopher Frayling's commentary, someone else did the voice of RAmon in FOD, and Voltone dubbed his own voice for FAFDM, but needed a translator's assitance since he could not speak English.

yes, Frayling did say that on the FAFDM commentary: Ramon was dubbed by someone else; but Volonte was contractually obliged to dub Indio into English; he couldn't speak English, and had to learn the lines phonetically.

However, (as was previously mentioned in a different thread on the voice actors), I am pretty sure Frayling is wrong about that point, because Ramon's voice and Indio's voice sound the same. So I don't know whether it was Volonte or some voice actor, but it was definitely the same person that dubbed Ramon and Indio's English-language voice.

are you going to necessarily trust that? I mean, all these years later? eg. I remember a thread here where someone linked to an article online where some dude said he was the guy who did (at least some of?) the whistling for the score of Leone's movies; whereas I believe that according to Frayling, Alessandro Alessandroni did the whistling. This is the sort of stuff that, four and a half decades later, we may never know for sure...

I was happy to accept Volonte's English voice as Frees for a time. Upon reflection though, they really don't sound much alike. I don't know Bernard Grant but he seems a more likely candidate.

Silly bit of trivia, Bernard Grant (Ramon/Esteban/Baxter) was married to Joyce Gordon who voiced Marisol and Consuela.
