I was the one who mentioned the four hour version of OUATITW and I`m relying on information that I read in the Video Watchdog magazine. According to Tim Lucas, Paramount unearthed a four hour print in bad condition sometime around 1996 (not sure of the year). In the documentary "Once upon a time - Sergio Leone", James Woods speaks about this version and he says that during the wrap party of OUATIA, Leone showed the four hour cut. He claims that it blows all other versions away. Guess we´ll just have to wait and see what version will end up on the SE DVD. Keep your fingers crossed

Where did you read it?

Terence Hill mentioned this in one of the interviews on the Japanese DVD release of "My name is Nobody" (or maybe it was on the "A genius two partners and a dupe" DVD, I don´t remember)

I allways get a kick out of Kinsky's bit part in FADM, both in the saloon and later in Agua Caliente. How big a star in Europe was he at that time? I know he made some pictures with Werner Herzog, I thought he was great in "Aguirre: The Wrath of God" any others worth seeing?

And while I'm on this subject who else in Leone's films was a star in his own right in Europe, I know Gian Maria Vollonte was and have seen "Christ Stopped at Eboli" but what other movies for him. Claudia of course, but who else.

Concerning Klaus Kinski: he did a couple of really great spaghetti westerns except FAFDM, for example; "The Great Silence"; And God said to Cain" and "A bullet for the  general". For Herzog he also did "Fitzcarraldo"; "Nosferatu the vampyre"; "Woyzeck"; "Cobra Verde".  All worth seeing.
Volonte also did a few great spaghetti westerns, such as; "A bullet for the general" and "Face to face", where he actually stars. Other films with Volonte worth mentioning  is "Investigation of a citizen above suspicion"; "Sacco and Vanzetti" and "The Red Circle". All of these definitely worth seeing.

According to Terence Hill, Sergio directed the opening scene of "My name is Nobody" (and was present on the set throughout the shoot). I tend to think that´s correct; the opening scene really has that "Sergio feel" to it.

Shorty Larsen: I think James Woods said it best, he considered the opening scene of OUATITW to be like a Haiku-poem. I agree, it´s a marvellous scene, one of the best (if not THE best) opening scenes in cinema history.

I would keep the "six being the perfect number" scene (I really love it!) and cut out the prolonged "Tuco taunts Blondie in the desert" scene; it gets tedious and overlong, I think. But keep in mind that these scenes all were in the original Italian version, which means it´s the way Leone wanted it. The only added scene (as far as I know at the moment) not appearing in the Italian version is the infamous "cavescene" where Tuco hires the gunmen to Kill Blondie. A little odd that Leone didn´t want that scene in the picture, in my opinion...

PS, An interesting real life example of this is the recent archeological findings at the Custer battlefield, the cavalry was equipped with single shot rifles, the Souix had superior Henry Repeating Rifles, and they concluded that rather than the popular notion of a "last stand" the battle was over quickly.

More on this; the cavalry used Springfield single shot rifles, because the military thought the men would waste ammo using repeater rifles. Also, the cartridges had faults; the casing was made of copper and after a few shots it would solder into the barrel because of the heat.
