Again, I have to wonder if film "restorers" are trying to actually restore the film to what it looked like when released, or are just trying to make it look how they think looks best. FAGS  >:D

Fags? Really?

Please forgive my ignorance but has DUCK YOU SUCKER / A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE been released on Blu-ray yet...?

No unfortunately not.  :-[
And don't be fooled by the title of this thread nor by the screencaps and short review in the post above yours...

Watched the movie yesterday and wanted to give you my opinion on the quality and examples that show what I mean.

Often there are blown-out whites (Juan's shirt!), although it doesn't look as drastic on this screencap as it did when I watched it (both on PC and TV). Colours often look to yellowish or washed out, like in this case.

Grain can be overemphasized in dark scenes like this one - although I prefer this too any use of DNR, of course:

Detail can be quite good during close ups.

Look how strange John's darker side of the face looks... completely grey and harsh contrast.

The flashbacks look totally desaturated (especially the last one), but it's possible that they are supposed to look that way.

Last but not least, here is a comparison of the Italian and English soundtracks. Music is identical, the quality is not.

Received the disc today!
I'm not overly impressed by both picture and audio quality. There are shots which almost look perfect, but too often there blown out whites and rather strange grain with black dots in darker scenes.
The English soundtrack is awful - to the point where it's sometimes hard to understand what the characters say. Too bad there aren't any English subtitles, otherwise I'd watch the movie in Italian with English subs turned on in order to enjoy the music.

It's funny how the reception on the Internet has changed from "BluRay of the year" to a more critical view.
I haven't received the disc yet (the ebay seller I bought it from hasn't even shipped it yet, I think :-\).

Let's collect all the negative stuf that has been said about the release so far:
- bad quality English language track
- "What about me?" is actually in Italian on the English language track
- colors look faded / brownish
- around the 39/40 mark a few frames from somewhere else in the movie are randomly spliced in
- the English language track is out of sync in places

Once Upon A Time In The West / Re: New Italian blu-ray December 5, 2013
« on: December 18, 2013, 02:47:11 PM »
Someone at bluray.com posted the following:
"I briefly compared the new Italian disc with my Paramount: they both sport the wonderful resto by the Cineteca di Bologna, supervised by Scorsese among the others. The transfer is virtually identical, only I find the Italian one a tad sharper, but it's a really difficult task to spot some relevant differences. Colour scheme too is exactly the same. However, keep in mind this is B-locked."

Someone at bluray.com posted the following:
"Easily one of the discs of the year. Colours are very warm, detail is rich and sharpness is excellent (but it's not over-sharpened). There are very few instances of debris/minor damages during the film. I confirm the English track, which is clearly the better option - especially regarding explosions, noises and so on.  Like "Once Upon a Time in the West", the disc is B-locked."

I've just ordered this from an Ebay seller. Initially,  I wanted to wait until the first reviews appear, but I just couldn't resist  :o

Rumours had already spread and were discussed on the German Cinefacts forums: 20th Century Fox will release a remastered version of TGBU in 2014. They confirmed it yesterday when they replied to a question posed by a user:

So, what do you think of this? Will we finally get a decent BluRay of this movie??
I'm thinking about asking via Facebook if it is possible to include fans in this project in order to assist them on some things that had been wrong in previous editions... What do you think?

UPDATE:
Fox wrote at Film-Insider:
"Zu Rocky liegen noch keine weiteren Informationen vor. Bisher ist nur bekannt, dass es einen neuen Transfer geben wird, mehr wissen wir leider noch nicht. Gleiches gilt auch für die Glorreichen Halunken."
("There is no further information regarding Rocky. The only thing that is known by now that there will be a new transfer, we don't know more yet, unfortunately. The same is true for The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.")

There seems to be general confusion regarding the terms region code, NTSC / PAL and HD...

NTSC means 23.97 frames per second (resulting in 30fps via 3.2 pulldown) and a resolution of 720x480 = SD
PAL means 25fps and a resolution of 720x576 = SD

These are the standards for SD material, either on DVDs or on BluRays where they are only used for bonus features.

HD means 24fps and 1920x1080. HD material neither is NTSC nor PAL!

And then there's region coding. Which doesn't have anything to do with how the material is encoded on the DVD / BluRay.

So if you have the Italian BluRay of FAFOD, you'll be able to play the disc in general, because it is region-free. The main feature will also be playable because its the normal HD standard, which is internationally the same. Only the bonus features may prove tricky, if your hardware doesn't support PAL.

@Novecento
Thank you :) :)

Several other German forums all report that this new release is uncut except for a few missing frames compared to the Mondo BD:
"Erstmals komplett ungeschnitten. Es gibt aber hier und da ganz kleine Frame-Cuts im Vergleich zur italienischen Blu-ray."

A Fistful of Dollars / Re: Universum BluRay (Germany 2013)
« on: February 22, 2013, 01:08:21 PM »
I wouldn't buy this one if I already had the Italian BD, but I don't...
And the picture quality is fine to me and most of all the price - 11€  O0

The only thing I'm mad about: the German main titles. I am German but... couldn't they have just left it as it was??

A Fistful of Dollars / Universum BluRay (Germany 2013)
« on: February 22, 2013, 12:20:03 PM »
I haven't received it yet, but here's some stuff I have found out about it:

It is based upon the superior Italian restoration of the movie.
MGM BD: http://images3.static-bluray.com/reviews/2898_6_1080p.jpg
Universum BD: http://screenshotcomparison.com/images/1361470634_2604783951.jpg
But the German BD is said to be darker and more reddish than the Italian counterpart.

Confirmation:
Italian BD: http://s14.directupload.net/images/130213/5io6dfum.png
German BD: http://s7.directupload.net/images/130222/7sdgslps.png

German BD: http://s7.directupload.net/images/130222/9hjkhnmr.png
Italian BD: http://s14.directupload.net/images/130213/6sqfa8rs.png

The main titles are in German:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/images/1361470634_7925463081.jpg

Apart from the well-known MGM bonus features, it contains an interview with Morricone, an Italian featurette about the restoration (possibly dubbed in German, don't know exactly), and featurettes about the locations where it was shot.

@ drinkanddestroy & Honest Farmer
I will compare it to the version on YouTube later, okay? The review today was really exhausting :D
I can confirm however that the 1sec that is missing on the Mondo BD, isn't missing on the Universum BD.

@ drinkandestroy
Very good point, I didn't remember about the intermission! Thank you!!!

And thanks for all your kind words:)
Sorry for the grammatical errors by the way, I got tired at the end :D

As I'm satisfied with this new release, I have also ordered FAFOD, which is based upon the Italian master of the movie.
