Other Films / Re: Sartana Your Angel of Death
« on: June 28, 2005, 11:21:08 AM »
I think that this one is better than the original (Sartana pray for Your Death). It tells a somewhat straight story which is somewhat credible and I'm not talking about historical accuracy.  If you like the first one you should like this one, too.

Texas Rangers which I saw lately seemed quite accurate but was little entertaining.

It's a very silly comedy played strictly for laughs...w/ Tomas Milian playing a Japanese servant named 'Sakura' (really!) to a samurai ..& is full of bad jokes...w/ admittedly, some cute little  visual references to y moments.
With a farting Japanese pony. ;) Well, that's a pretty bad comedy. The score is however much better than in Ace High. Neither film is as good as the Trinities, imho.

I really enjoyed Blood Money.  A stupid film, I guess, but a funny story idea and quite entertaining.  Oh for a map on ladies butts!
Blood Money wasn't that bad. All in all a logical story and production values rather high. My impression of the last scene was that it was shot in Hongkong.

My candidates for worst: A Dollar Between the Teeth and Strange Tale of Minnesota Stinky .The latter is from Demofilo Fidani, worst director of Italy.  ;D

Son... You obviously haven't watched enough movies...
I expected that kind of reply.

FISTFUL was an experimental attempt by Leone, trying to find his way. Both he and Morricone acknowledged it as such. An experiment that culminated with GBU.
Well received by the audiences. It provided the funds to continue.

And I'm sure you don't understand the extent of the near xenophobic comment you made that the Japanese understand the American west through Italian eyes better than they understand themselves.

Kurosawa was relatively unsuccessful in Japan and from what I figured out Yoyimbo didn't succeed in Japan, either. FOD was pretty well received.  Japanese were more addicted to SW than Americans.  The best and most widely sorted offer of SW DVD is actually coming from Japan.

Fistful of Dollars is a pretty exact remake of Yoyimbo. The latter is really difficult to watch and to enjoy. If I hadn't seen FOD before I probably would have had an orientation problem.  FOD was probably even better understandable to a Japanese audience allthough I would be interested if I were wrong. Kurosawa had the ideas(e.g. the story with the coffins and the not so good but cool hero) and Leone the knowledge to implement them. Kubrick had a different style (at least he had style) and was more prolific.

... FAFDM (which has been my favourite since I saw it as a kid in the theatres at least, if I remember well, 3 times) has none of these flaws: the plot is tighter, fast-moving, never boring. It has inconsistencies, but one doesn't notice them because of the rhythm.

FAFDM is really good. I first didn't like it so much because it suffers a bit from a classical movie problem. Both the good and the bad have good chances to decide the battle early but for no explicable reasons don't do so. Now after many seeings I'm more forgiving. I really like Volonté. But GBU is better  ;)

General Discussion / Re: A permanent thread for Spaghetti Top 20

As both a plausably realistic western and a Leone Lover, lol I'd exorcise the following that I've seen from the list.
Django Kill
Return of Ringo
Pistol For Ringo

I didn't like Return of Ringo, either, mainly because it doesn't feel like a Western. I don't know Django, Kill. It's a Milian and have read many favorable reviews.  I personally like the humoristic Sabata but not the sequels.

If you throw out all these you need to replace them.   ;D

In random order, I would at least like to see the following spags in the Top30:

FOD, FOFDM, GBU, OUATITW, Django, A Bullet for the general, the Trinity duo, companeros, cemerary without crosses, the ringo's, stranger in town, the stranger returns, death rides a horse, the big gundown, the big silence, the mercenary, keoma, mannaja, django kill, viva django, day of anger, my name is nobody, requiescant, face to face, sabata, sartana.
That makes more than 30 already. There is a Top 20 list at Sartana Homestead (http://www.sartana.homestead.com/Top20.html) .

1. The Big Gundown 183
2. The Great Silence 162
3. Django 139
4. Death Rides a Horse 127
5. Face to face 99
6. A Bullet for the General 88
7. Sabata 82
8. Navajo Joe 71
9. Django Kill.. 70
10. Companeros 67
11. Day of Anger 63
12  Keoma
 The Mercenary 62
14. Return of Ringo 61
15. If You Meet Sartana....Pray for Your Death 55
16. Run, Man, Run 44
17. Cemetary Without Crosses 41
18. Any Gun Can Play 40
19. The Price of Power
   The Hellbenders 37

Add to these:
A Pistol for Ringo
They call Me Trinity
Tepepa
Sartana the Gravedigger
The Bounty Killer

and then the 5 Leone's .

That could be my list. Good replacements are welcome.

To Stay away from List:

Django

Django was the biggest success of Corbucci. It inspired  really a  lot of other films. If you skip it you lose judgement. Django is the embittered hero whom we hadn't seen before.

The Mercenary is a favourite of mine, just like Companeros. The first can claim to be the original.

Read the rumor that Hellbenders was going to be released by I think Anchor Bay or Blue Underground.

Anchor Bay has it on its page. Release is supposed to be this fall.

OUATITW is a bit too long but I like it very much, too. It was the first Leone film I saw on the big screen.

General Discussion / Carlo Simi- biography anyone?
« on: January 24, 2005, 11:43:45 PM »
I'm looking for some basic biographic data of Carlo Simi,  like date of birth and death. More data wouldn't hurt, either.

Thanks!

IMDB has very little:
