Maybe K relied too much on "significance" and not enough on having something happen on the screen? Hence cryptic dialogues and camera moves that "mean" something but rarely "do" much? I'm overstating my point for the sake of clarity: he was not the most cerebral filmmaker ever, he was just a bit too cerebral, or too philosophical, losing some of the basics on the way.

I've seen Last Temptation in 2024, believe me you don't want to awaken that monster. Let it win.

The Serpent's Egg (1977) - 0/10. Worst film ever made? Well, it's certainly a contender.

You haven't watched Marty's Last Temptation in a long time, have you?

Martin Eden (Pietro Marcello, 2019) - 8/10
Quite an interesting take on the novel. The movie changes time and location: post war Italy. With a much greater focus on Eden's politics than on his litterature. It's also highly elliptic, which can cause some understanding issues but also densifies and adds poetry to a book that, however good it is, suffers from being too explicit and talkative. The most interesting parti pris here is the use of old stock footage everywhere in the film without clear notice (the original footage was shot in 16mm), effectively blending the borders between fiction, documentary but also the time periods (of the novel and the film). That visual language adds a lot of poetry (once again, to a book which lacks this sort of things). Apart from that I'm not crazy of the very rough 16mm aesthetics and the lack of budget is sometimes distracting, but rarely. I feel like that's also what lead to the overall chopiness, which I like a lot, so i nthe end it's probably a better film thanks to the budget constraints.

I saw each once, and as I recall, I didn?t like Lawless much and I really disliked The Master.

The Master is an incredible piece of art but it's not for everyone. Also I would call it a masterpiece but not a flawless one.

Funnily enough, I haven't returned to this much; I've seen The Master more often. But I was right to score this as I did. Fun, fun, fun. And it's a Leonean kind of fun.

I remember this one being more like a forgettable 6.5/10 (which I had, indeed, totally forgotten about) while The Master proved to be an actual 10.

Zone of Interest (Glazer, 2023) - 8/10 - very good yet too heavy handed yet the ending is incredibly powerful
Certain Women (Kelly Reichardt, 2016) - 8.5/10 - terrific
Punch Drunk Love (PTA, 2002) - 7.5/10 - much smarter than they say
New York, New York (Marty, 1977) - 6/10 - boring but Bob rocks
Cape Fear (Marty, 1991) - 6.5/10 - probably the most hectic camerawork in Marty's career
Last Temptation of the Christ (Marty, 1988) - 1/10 - still the worst movie i've seen from start to finish. TWICE.
The life of David Gale (Alan Parker, 2003) - 4/10 - Alan wasn't in shape at this point. And don't get me started on early 2000's flashback transitions.
Tokyo Story (Ozu, 1953) - 8/10 - Very good, would have loved it much better without the moral lecture in the end. The film is smarter than that!

Home Alone (1990) - I might enjoy this movie more now as an adult, and it has that timeless Hollywood feel when it was made at a time when so few movies felt that way -- and that feel, so to speak, became totally extinct by the turn of the century. John Hughes really is the last classic Hollywood filmmaker, and Home Alone was his last major work, even if he didn't direct it. This will definitely enter Wizard of Oz and It's a Wonderful Life territory years from now, whereas the sequel absolutely will not. Though it was better than it had any right to be. A-

Noooooo
Home Alone 2 is the best Home Alone!

Bacurau (2019)  - 7.5/10
Very good brazilian contemporary spaghetti western. it's messy but very enjoyable and keeps reinventing the genre the whole time.

Yeah that alone extinguished the last remains of motivation I had to go see it in theater. People are STILL giving me shit for only having seen Kingdom of Heaven's theatrical cut "instead of the DC that makes it a masterpiece" (don't worry Drink, pretty sure those guys haven't seen The Patriot so they don't know what a real masterpiece is). There is no way I'm watching this Napoleon twice.
