I watched this after seeing it on Eddie Muller's top 25 list.  I didn't know what the movie was about so i didn't go into with any expectations.  Its not a bad movie.  I read the comments in this thread and I agree that you can either make excuses for it by psychoanalyzing it or just plain like it for what it is.  If you want to look at this movie as a straight up project without the psychoanalysis, it has a very implausible plot.  Running away from the first accident was a stretch to me.  THEN, the second accident.  How convenient.  To me a better film would've had Al and the girl pull off the impersonation, get the money,  then things come apart.  It would've added at least 30- 45 minutes more to the film also.  As is, i rank this about a 6.5 also out of 10.

By the way, i can't remember if i saw it referenced on this board or over at TCM, but Janus has a 4k restoration coming out:

This was a pretty good noir.  It was recommended to me by a member of the TCM forum because of my interest in Richard Widmark.  Widmark didn't let me down. He was pretty good in this one, albeit his first role.  The movie itself was pretty good.  I agree with everybody about the ending.  I half expected Mature's character to pull a steel plate out of his suit ala Eastwood in A Fist Full of Dollars, lol.  Very unbelievable ending.  Other than that, i rate this a pretty solid 7 out of 10. I saw a bad copy on Youtube.  It looks to be a pretty good film cinematography wise if i can find a better copy.

A excellent film. Almost a masterpiece.  I just found another reason to love Charles Laughton after seeing this film.  This is another underrated Noir.  The acting and cinematography really shine here. I didn't like the ending but it didn't  detract from the film.  I rank this a solid 8 out of 10.

Italian and English audio options too. Gotta start saving my pennies - hopefully it will come down in price a little.

The fools - ah well. Wasn't your commentary in German though? Or were you planning to re-record it for them? I would have liked to see the scan of your 35mm print though.

I was greatly relieved when i saw that its gonna have English dubbing.
