Other Films / SARTANA' HERE....TRADE YOUR PISTOL FOR A COFFIN ( 1971?)
« on: October 23, 2021, 10:22:40 PM »
Garkko is gone and so is any trace of originality.
One good gag in the first scene where he doses dynamite by shooting a flying canteen!

Otherwise, it's a retread of the first film right down to the incomprehensible and double crosses.
4/10

Off-beat Western with character driven, unpredictable plot.
Look for a bleach-blond Jack Lord and the drop dead gorgeous Tina Louise, in supporting roles.

Robert Taylor makes a credible anti-hero.

Note: this might be the first film where a character utters " Go to HELL!"

Other Films / GUNSMOKE: the radio show
« on: July 11, 2019, 08:03:55 PM »
The best Western you've never seen.
The tv show dramatized dozens of the radio plays but they don't compare.

GUNSMOKE is the closest American radio ever came to art.

Radiospirits.com has multiple collections on sale.

Check it out!

Interesting new documentary on Irish poet WB Yeats. Directed by Bob Geldolf>

Provides some background of the romantic/revolutionary mythology of the Ireland depicted  so memorably in DYS.

I THINK there should be a topic forum to discuss American television westerns.
A slew have been released on dvd and are ripe for discussion:
GUNSMOKE
LAWMAN
RIFLEMAN
HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL
WANTED;DEAD OR ALIVE....

what say yo'all?

General Discussion / Does CLint really shoot people in the back?
« on: December 06, 2016, 01:48:18 PM »
There is a new book out about Eastwood's westerns by James Nieibaur.

He repeats a claim that I have read before; TMWNN was the first anti-hero because he "shot people in the back", something John Wayne would never do.
Now, he did kill bad guys for dubious reasons e.g. the three members of Indio's gang ("Too bad you have to die"). You would not have seen that kind of violence in previous westerns from the "hero". He would have tied them up or turned them in to the law.

But, "in the back"? In any of Clint's westerns?

I am surprised this isn't listed yet!

ANyway, this could have been one of the better Euro-American westerns of it era.
The only reason it is not, well there are THREE reasons: Borgnine, Martin, Elam.

If you watch the film you will see how they sabotage an otherwise intriguing western. And Raquel has never looked better.

Other Films / Alvarez Kelly (1966)
« on: November 09, 2013, 02:44:28 PM »
This can be added to the American western index.

Not good, not bad.
Like many of its kind, it features way past their prime Hollywood stars (Holden, Widmark) in a vanishing genre.
Interesting, for its vague similarity to GBU/FISTFUL;  Holden doesn't care which side wns the Civil wa, he's out to make a buck.

BTW one of the all-time worst tile songs!

Duck, You Sucker / WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY - real story of the IRA
« on: January 05, 2013, 12:22:43 PM »
I highly recommend this powerful film to all DYS fans.
It is a sober tale of the IRA in Cork County during the years of 1920-22.

I kept 'flashing back' to DYS while watching it!
You'll see why.

check it out!

Other Films / GUNFIGHT AT COMMANCHE CREEK
« on: August 09, 2012, 12:32:29 PM »
This film stars Audie Murphy and was released as a Warner Archive title.
Although made in 1964 and in colour, it has the feel of a low budget "b" movie from the 50's .

Pretty lame but it is worth noting for one reason: the plot contains a variation on Blondie & Tuco's scheme from GBU;
the capture, turn in for reward, rescue , turn for HIGHER reward bit. Its not exactly the same in GACC but the premise is basically the same.
Wonder if Sergio saw this
