Something crossed my mind: does anyone here think everything Major Warren says is a lie?

1) His Lincoln letter's a forgery.
2) The story of Smithers' son is rather... gay. To say at least. Seems exaggerated and out of  place with the character.
3) Much of his observations concerning Minnie Mink's place are loose and don't really fit, and we have to take them for granted:
a) He said Minnie hates Mexicans (''No dogs or Mexicans allowed''), but when the 4 arrive with the stagecoach she doesn't display any unfriendly behavior towards Bob.
b) He did not know who else worked at Minnie's (black kitchen girl Gemma, and black stable boy Charly), as he doesn't mention them in his speech.
c) He didn't check the cellar beneath the inn (?!).
4) He lied about his military career, and the fact he burned down ''his own people'' in order to escape the camp.
5) John Ruth hints (in the borderline racist sentence during the ''Stew scene'') to the audience when he says that everything he says is basically a lie.

There's  probably more but this is what I can think of without re-watching it.

Yes that's the inference.

I also feel like SLJ's character was a pathological liar. I don't know about the specifics because he was in the barn when Bruce Dern's character was talking about his son, but I agree with that theory in general.

As for the movie, it's something of a misfire, but also very good in some ways. I can't really dispute anything in Grogg's review, but I'd rather watch a flawed movie by a (once?) great writer/director that is in love with and trying to rekindle a (potentially) dying kind of movie.

Intellectually, I won't defend anything, but in terms of movie making, I agree with noodles that this is his most cinematic work despite the claustrophobic setting. I can't imagine it being easy to shoot 70mm in mostly interior settings, but I also see DJ's point of what's the point of the 70 mm.

This definitely needed to be tighter, and easily could have lost a half hour. The flashback sequence didn't need to be nearly as long, for one.

Morricone's score was good in spots. I didn't care for the main theme in the beginning but it became more interesting as the movie went on.

8/10

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre..

Just watched the Blu Ray. Like "Django Unchained," it's so damned pretentiously talky and profane, and Tarantino manages to make respectable actors seem dull and in over their heads. (Kurt Russell was terrible.)

It actually got better as it went on...but on and on it went.

As with DJANGO UNCHAINED I am really puzzled over the negative reactions here.
I do not see how a fan of Westerns, fans of Sergio Leone westerns, can not enjoy these films! :o

Let's see now:
THE HATEFUL 8 is a
western
directed by QT
scored by Ennio Morricone
starring
Kurt Russel
Walter Goggins
Samuel Jackson

What's not to like?????? ;D

Some interesting stuff from IMDb about the film

"I think this is probably his most sophisticated and nuanced film to date. Of course there's the main plot on a surface level, but beneath that is a very pointed statement about the America's history of racism, with the Civil War playing itself out all over again in the cabin. In the end we're left with a scene of bloody carnage, with the last people left alive reading the fake Lincoln letter, which expresses an idealism that America would like the believe is real, except it's not, and that false hope is juxtaposed against the the horrific reality of what America actually is. And even if you don't completely agree with that interpretation, it's clear that the film is intending to say something about race in America, and it does so through a whole lot of subtext rather than directly through the main narrative. If you ask me, that sounds like a film with plenty of nuance. "

Nicely put.
DO not forget the  delightfully deranged grand guignol humour
My favorite line is at the end as Walter Goggins is stringing up his victim:
"As my first and ONLY act as sherrif of Red Rock I sentence you to be hung by the neck until dead"
Great, great scene!

Exactly. We'll see how it works on a little screen in a few months though.

I watched it on a really nice 50 inch Panasonic screen.
I played really well. Looks fantastic! In fact I suspect it plays better in the home video format than it did in the theater.

check it out!

okay okay what about Morricone?!!! I feel like I haven't heard shit about his score.

Didn't he win the Academy Award (and the BFTA and many others)? ;D

Yes, Morricone won the Best Original Score award for Hateful Eight.

And it's WALTON Scoggins, not Walter.

Hmm, not so sure about that if you're talking about the roadshow version. How could a 70mm analog projection with an extreme Ultra-Panavision aspect ratio of 2.76:1 play better on someone's digital HDTV?

It simply does not work half as good as QTs masterpieces. Compared to my expectations it was a disappointment. Entertaining, yes, but far from fascinating.

Actually it is QTs weakest film so far. With his other western being the 2nd weakest.

Maybe QT is now as dead as Scorsese.

This clip and score is right up Mr Tarantino's alley...

.
I can imagine this at the beginning of the movie, when Ruth is transferring prisoner Daisy.  With the train crashing thru all that snow
