There seem to be two kinds of people on the SLWB: those who have seen TSR, and those who bash TSR

Exactly. And those who have seen TSR have no soul.

They're probably also Commies who don't watch Fox News

Then I'm the third party. I have not seen it, I don't bash it.

My guess is that the female audience may like TSR more than more male oriented movies like GBU or Pulp. A mystery nonetheless.

What was it that won the females voters over? Was it the sweaty assed men stuck in a prison, or was it the anal male rape scene?

If your premise was correct then Titanic would be number one.

To say nothing of the effeminate metro-sexuals who frequent IMDb.

I promptly concede You're the  one who can speak about that. You probably "forgot", though, to add "interracial" for political correctedness. Did You?

The interracial love story, probably.

I see that ´The Lego Movie´ is now in the #250.  Beating the likes of There Will Be Blood, Ben Hur and Gandhi.

Who knows, this time next week in might be number 1.  :D

Ben Hur and Ghandi are totally mediocre and totally dead films. Both belong to the worst Oscar winners ever. I'm sure that The Lego Movie deserves to beat them.

Maybe IMDB is more reasonable than I thought ...

GBU has now dropped to #8 on IMDB. Since this thread was started, Twelve Angry Men and Schindler's List have jumped ahead of GBU.

complete IMDB 250 list: http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?tt0068646&ref_=tt_awd

The top 10 are:

1. The Shawshank Redemption
2. The Godfather
3. the Godfather Part II
4. The Dark Knight
5. Pulp Fiction
6. Twelve Angry Men
7. Schindler's List
8. GBU
9. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
10. Fight Club

For Leone movies: GBU is #8, OUATITW is #29, OUATIA is #74, FAFDM is #94, FOD is #231 (DYS is not on the list; it has a 7.7/10 rating, but has less than 20,000 votes; in order to qualify for the top 250 list, a movie needs to have at least 25,000 votes from "regular voters," adjusted by IMDB's algorithms)

The formula for calculating the Top Rated 250 Titles gives a true Bayesian estimate:

weighted rating (WR) = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C

Where:

R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the Top 250 (currently 25000)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 7.0)

For the Top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some random notes on the rest of the IMDB Top 250 list:

Scorsese: Goodfellas is #17, The Departed is #45, Taxi Driver is #79, Raging Bull is #113, The Wolf of Wall Street is #138, Casino is #139, Shutter Island is #201

Hitchcock: Psycho is #36, Rear Window is #37, North by Northwest is #63, Vertigo is #67, Rebecca is #146, Dial M for Murder is #159, Strangers on a Train is #205, Notorious is #222

Wilder: Sunset Blvd. is #48, Double Indemnity is #80, Witness for the Prosecution is #81, The Apartment is #99, Some Like It Hot is #107. The Lost Weekend and Ace in the Hole do not have enough votes to qualify for the list.

Westerns are severely underrepresented. Other than the four Leone Westerns mentioned above, the only Westerns on the list are Django Unchained at #58  ::), Unforgiven at #110, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at #173, and High Noon at #214. That's it. The entire IMDB 250 list has 8 Westerns. High Noon (which I am not a big fan of) is the only classic American Western that made the IMDB 250. Not a single John Ford or Howard Hawks Western made it, whether because their ratings weren't high enough or they didn't have enough votes to qualify.

Casablanca is #30
Whiplash is #39
Citizen Kane is #65
Lawrence of Arabia is #84
Bicycle Thieves is #87
Gone Girl is #147 – BULLSHIT!
The Deer Hunter is #148
Judgement at Nuremberg is #149
Gone With the Wind is #155 – still way too high
There Will Be Blood is #178
The 400 Blows is #182
The Best Years of Our Lives is #196
Boyhood is #209
The Night of the Hunter is #230 – BULLSHIT!

A Streetcar Named Desire did not make the top 250. That is crazy.
Out of the Past does not have enough votes to qualify for the list.

I hate that movie. It shouldn't even be in the top 500

I'm glad The Dark Knight is down to #4. Maybe in a few centuries, moviegoers will wise up enough to vote it off the list entirely. O0

Better The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Pulp Fiction, GBU and Fight Club should be dropped of the list, they are just too good for such a list. ;)

I was about to  :'( but then I got to the end of your post.

I like IMDB because it's made me discover a tonne of movies that 20 years ago, would just not be possible; especially the information about silent films. It really is an amazing tool, but the other side of the user input isn't as great and the Top 250 list is obviously based on popularity which negates it. Still, I must admit when I first got into movies in the early 2000s (when GBU was probably about #20) I used the 250 as a guide to watch the "best movies ever made"; AND The Shawshank Redemption is a great movie, but I was a fan before it was cool to like it  ;)

I really think that a major problem now is that a lot of movies in the past 10 years or so that are being produced in Hollywood aren't that great, but I have an idea that the studios somehow manipulate the IMDB voting system so most blockbusters appear on the list during the first couple of weeks of release.
