I was about to  :'( but then I got to the end of your post.

I like IMDB because it's made me discover a tonne of movies that 20 years ago, would just not be possible; especially the information about silent films. It really is an amazing tool, but the other side of the user input isn't as great and the Top 250 list is obviously based on popularity which negates it. Still, I must admit when I first got into movies in the early 2000s (when GBU was probably about #20) I used the 250 as a guide to watch the "best movies ever made"; AND The Shawshank Redemption is a great movie, but I was a fan before it was cool to like it  ;)

I really think that a major problem now is that a lot of movies in the past 10 years or so that are being produced in Hollywood aren't that great, but I have an idea that the studios somehow manipulate the IMDB voting system so most blockbusters appear on the list during the first couple of weeks of release.

The simple fact that every movie with less than 30 or 50 000 votes (don't know the exact number) is excluded from the top 250, makes sure that tons of outsider films are out, so that there are mainly films which everybody has at least heard about once, and nobody must wonder about films they have never heard about.
Without these vote limit e.g. many Tarkovsky films would be in the list.

Yeah of course the vote limit is a key element, but it is at a major disadvantage to older films and foreign films which don't have the same coverage. Not that it matters, there are plenty of other sources to see the top films ever made.

I've only ever seen 'The Mirror' and 'Solyaris' but both great films, I really want to see 'Stalker', but there are 100s of film that can fit in the same category.

The Sight and Sound list is for that matter more fun.

And the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They list, a kind of meta list build on a lot of other lists. But only on lists which have some kind of reputation.

Yes, I haven't searched through TSPDT extensively before; but I enjoy it as it's named after my favourite Michael Sarrazin movie and also contains some great profile pages of my favourite directors along with quotes about them that I've never read before.

I've never gone through their full film list before though.

We first discussed the Leone film's IMDB ranking in February 2014, and then again in May 2015. Here is how the Leone films have fared on IMDB at those two time periods, and now:

GBU was #6 in February 2014, #8 in May 2015, and is now #9

OUATITW was #24 in February 2014, #29 in May 2015, and is now #31

OUATIA was #78 in February 2014, #74 in May 2015, and is now #69

FAFDM was #99 in Feb. 2014, #94 in May 2015, and is now #105

FOD was #237 in Feb. 2014, #231 in May 2015, and has now fallen out of the top 250

(DYS was never on the list; it has a solid 7.7/10 rating)

Reminds me that I have watched The Shawshank Redemption meanwhile, and while it was entertaining (6/10), I have now for sure no idea why it is featured that high. Actually being in the top 250 in a lower position would be surprise enough.  :-\

IMDb list is now totally irrelevant, too much fanboy manipulation voting their favorites with 10s and all others with 1s en masse it was first mentioned by posters when Batman shot inexplicably up and was repeated with other blockbusters.

Well, it was never a list I could take seriously. Still the love for TSR surprises me. It is not a famous film here in Germany, unlike the others which are in the top 20. (famous does not necessarily means also good)
