How about The Rockford Files? Some of the greatest TV moments ever.

RIP.

Though I'm not a huge fan of the movie, The Americanization of Emily is probably my favorite Garner performance. Points too for Hour of the Gun and The Rockford Files, rivaling Columbo as the best '70s crime drama.

I also saw him in HOUR OF THE GUN (which I liked) and A MAN CALLED SLEDGE (which I liked - particularly the use of Simi's El Paso set from FAFDM - except for the musical interludes, which I skipped). And I liked GRAN PRIX very much.

You're right about the 2 best 70s dramas (crime or otherwise), but I'd give the edge to Rockford. Columbo only had 45 episodes in the 70s, while Rockford had about 120 (depending on how you count). Yeah, the Columbo episodes were longer (filling 90 minute spots usually, but sometimes 120), but they were paced pretty leisurely, and--especially for the 2hr ones--they have a good bit of filler. Of course, Rockford episodes sometimes had filler, and there were several 2-parters. But in terms of the amount of quality writing, Rockford wins. Still I'm glad both series were produced, and that we can enjoy them today on home video.

Garner is one of those actors that was much better than his filmography indicates.

RIP
