very sad news

here is a nice, long article from the NY Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/13/movies/lauren-bacall-sultry-movie-star-dies-at-89.html?_r=0

She did live to be 89, and I assume she was in good health till close to the end, because I saw her on TCM not too long ago, and she looked really good. Also, her family says it seems she had a massive stroke, and there is no mention of her having recent health issues. I HOPE that was the case, that she died from a massive stroke, hopefully immediately and with no pain. There's never a good time to die, but considering that we're all gonna do so once in our lives, that would be the way to do it – being 89 years old, and in good health almost till the end and dying instantly from a massive stroke.

RIP Betty

Bacall wasn't scheduled for a day on this August's TCM Summer Under the Stars; I wonder if they'll interrupt someone else's day to give a tribute to Bacall, or if they'll wait until September to do so ...

in the meantime, enjoy this TCM tribute to her delivered by Kelsey Grammer, from September 2012, when she was TCM's Star of the Month https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s50HdOn1Nyw

Wife of Jason Robards Jr., Cheyenne.

yeah, nobody even remembers that she was married to Robards; she'll always be remembered as Bogie's husband.

Bacall could pretty much do it all, from trading wits with Bogie in a Hawks movie to being effective in a Minnelli comedy or a Sirk melodrama. She's undoubtedly one of the greatest screen actresses of all time and will never be forgotten by those who love movies. 89 was a good run, RIP.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre..

Looking through her filmography, I think I've mostly (perhaps even only) seen some of her later roles. RIP

you haven't seen her movies with Bogie?

IMO: Dark Passage was crap
To Have and Have Not has the famous scene/line between Bogie and Bacall, but is not a good movie
The Big Sleepis a good movie (if perhaps slightly overrated – I would not put it among the greatest of all noirs, as many people do.)
Key Largo is a good movie, which also features very good performances by Edward G. Robinson and Claire Trevor (who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress)

I'd definitely recommend seeing The Big Sleep and Key Largo if you haven't yet.

In later roles, I remember her in The Shootist and Murder on the Orient Express. I also saw her in Harper (1966) with Paul Newman, but for some reason I don't have any strong memories of the movie

TCM will have a 24-hour tribute to Bacall, beginning at 8 PM Sep. 15th with her 2005 TCM "Private Screenings" interview with Robert Osborne, ending at 8 PM on Sep. 16th, which would have been her 90th birthday. Info here http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/tcm-remembers-lauren-bacall-with-24-hour-marathon-20140814 (schedule for the tribute is at the bottom of the page)
