I have Something to Do with Death . . . So do you.

« #135 : June 25, 2008, 12:31:11 PM »

One thing the doc reminded me about: there were something like 25 SWs made before AFOD. AFOD followed the practice (apparently set by those earlier films) of making up American sounding aliases for cast and crew. Because of the success of AFOD, SL dropped the phony names . . . and so did everyone else in the industry. People wanted their real names connected to what was suddenly turning into a really successful trend. So one of the things SL did was to make Italian filmmakers actually proud of their product, thus encouraging them to start promoting them AS Italian products rather than as American knock-offs. And that undoubtedly led to a number of innovations.

I'm wondering if those earlier 25 films were subsequently re-christened with the correct names. Also, it would be handy if we had a term for those pre-Leone Italian Westerns, to distinguish them from later SWs. Anybody have a suggestion?

Is it just me or did Milchan really say they are working on "full" directors cut? This is the first time I hear that directly from him. Cool O0 But on the other hand, isn't this documentary from 1999? ???

Just wanted to say thanks for downloading and posting for everyone.  Appreciate it.   O0

Wish they had found a way to include that with the Anthology somehow.

It's a good little documentary; it won't impress the hardcore fans, as they've probably heard all the facts and anecdotes before, but anyone that is Sergio Leone's fan will enjoy listening to people talk about him and the times they were working together.

This is the complete version of the documentary that was included in part on the OUATIA DVD right?

I've seen it already too but it's a shame it wasn't included in complete form on the DVD so we could all have nice personal copies.

This post gets Agnew's stamp of approval!

AMC used to show this semi-regularly. I don't recall seeing more than the OUATIA segments though, which I saw multiple times (not just on the DVD).

James Woods was the most interesting, IMO.

I was sad to see that for some reason, the guy who posted the documentary to YouTube deleted the last two of the 7 videos, so now there are only 5 videos. HOWEVER, the portion of the documentary that was in those final 2 videos -- ie. the end of the documentary, the portion which is about OUATIA -- is available as a bonus feature on the OUATIA dvd. So between the five videos posted to Youtube, and the bonus feature on the OUATIA dvd, you have the full documentary  :)

The ending of that documentary always makes me cry. As the video is fading out... Claudia Cardinale says, "Many times when I'm shooting a movie with a director -- you know, he's putting the camera -- and I think of Sergio, and I say, 'Sergio, unfortunately, it's not you here today.' "  :'(

I'm tempted to go out and just buy OUATIA [229 MV] but I really want to wait for the restoration.
