I'm tempted to go out and just buy OUATIA [229 MV] but I really want to wait for the restoration.
you should definitely buy the 229MV dvd rather than waiting for the extended restoration. Not for this bonus feature, but to have the movie. As of now, there have been problems with the restored blu ray in Italy; the restored scenes are of awful quality and many viewers believe that the rest of the movie is of very poor quality as well (check out the 40-page thread about the restoration for further discussion of that) and there's no word on when it will be released here in USA (not sure about when you guys would get it in Australia; are you guys the same region code as Italy?) Who knows when a proper dvd/blu ray will be released with the restoration. No doubt every Leone fan should own the dvd and/or blu ray of the 229MV. I think you can get at least the dvd pretty cheaply (at least in USA, not sure about Australia). As to the question of dvd vs. blu ray, I'm not sure; I always get both, being a nutjob; but if you wanna choose the one that is better, you can read the appropriate threads here to decide which to get. But IMO, if you can afford it, you should definitely purchase the 229MV on dvd and/or blu ray
It's region B here in Australia, but now that I think about it, I seriously might as well buy the blu ray, I mean, I already have The Man With No Name Trilogy on blu ray, Duck You Sucker on DVD, and OUATITW on blu ray. It would make sense for me to add this to my Leone collection [I'll probably get COR sometime in the future on DVD], and when the restored blu ray does come out, I'll just double dip. I guess I'll be buying it within the next few days then
RE: OUATIA: I am not recommending that you buy the 229MV merely for the sake of owning it, like a rabid fan would want to own everything for his collection. I am recommending that you buy it because right now it is the only good version of the movie; as I said, the only extended version that has currently been released has significant problems, and there may have to be further restorations etc. and to be honest, I don't know if the new scenes will ever be as good quality as the rest of the movie. So, especially since we have no idea when a good version of an extended cut will be released, there's no doubt that you should own the 229MV. who knows what will happen down the line, if maybe one day they'll stop making 229MV dvd's and only make extended cuts. who knows. a serious fan of this movie would want to own a dvd and/or blu ray of the 229MVRE: COR: (unless you are a fan of the sword-and-sandal subgenre), I'd say there's no need to own this dvd. If you have a dvd rental service, rent it once, watch the movie once, then watch it again with Frayling's commentary, and then never rent it again. (However, I see on Amazon that at least here in America, the dvd is so cheap -- about $4 for new dvd's -- that it may be worth it to buy just cuz it's so cheap).
