This weekend! Original Jaws in 3-D (NOT Jaws 3-D). The early word is good: https://gizmodo.com/jaws-3d-real-d-rerelease-steven-spielberg-universal-sha-1849464067

So, Jaws (1975) is back in theaters, now in 3-D (not to be confused with the 1983's Jaws 3-D). The new format has, I understand, Spielberg's blessing. Anyway, a chance to see what is a very good movie on the big screen is not a chance I'll pass up and the visual enhancement sounds interesting. The new release lasts only a week, beginning on Labor Day Weekend. I was stoked to go, but when I ran the idea past the missus there was no enthusiasm.

"Oh, come on."

"No way."

Mrs. J doesn't like any film where wildlife is humiliated by humans, even when it's a shark. Yes, she's a bit of a tree hugger.

I try every trick in the book to get her to go. To each of these, the answer is No, No, and No. Finally I launch my last-ditch attempt.

"Can't we go for my birthday?'

"It's not your birthday."

"It will be some day. Can't I have it on account?"

She remains unmoved, but allows that we could go to the cineplex together if she can choose another picture to watch concurrently while I'm viewing Jaws in 3-D (not to be confused with 1983's Jaws 3-D).

An acceptable compromise. But what will she choose as her alternate?

We go to the Fandango website and start going down the list. Most of the films have trailers posted, so getting a sense of each title is easy.

First, The Invitation, which looks like a vampire movie. Mrs. J likes horror films, but she's not too impressed with what she sees here.

Next, Beast, which looks like Jaws on land, but with a CG lion.  Nah.

3,000 Years of Longing seems somewhat interesting, Sheherazade meets Aladdin. Maybe.

Fall begins with some cool technical climbing, but then becomes a story about survival on a ridiculously tall CG tower. Why would such a place even exist?

Finally we watch the trailer for Where the Crawdads Sing, which appears to be Swamp Water meets To Kill a Mockingbird. Mrs. J likes the idea of a young woman living alone outdoors. Mrs. J herself would like to live alone outdoors and pretend she's a young woman.

It looks like we have our winner.

But wait, wait! Before Mrs. J can leave the viewing console, Mr. J pulls a fast one and runs the re-release trailer for Jaws in 3-D (not to be confused with 1983's Jaws 3-D).

She. Cannot. Look. Away.

"Spielberg," she mutters at the finish. "OK."

"OK? As in 'OK let's go see the Spielberg'?"

"Yeah."

Well, it IS a pretty good trailer.

Put a 70s film up against the crap they make these days and the 70s film will win every time.

Is there ANYTHING Universal won't do to promote the re-release of Jaws in 3-D?
