So among you guys who's seen many of his films, which ones are the good ones?

You want me to repeat myself? Well, OK: La belle noiseuse (the greatest film about painting ever); Va savoir (nice use of a play-within-a-film); and The Duchess of Langeais (a Balzac adaptation).

I have a DVD copy of Paris Belongs to Us, and I've tried to watch it several times, but I've never been able to make it all the way through. I've never attempted Out 1. Celine and Julie Go Boating leaves me cold.

To me, there are about 100 legit ways to attack Cameron and his work, but Rivette saying the guy cannot direct shows that there are many things about filmmaking the french director was miles from understanding. I'm not sure what he really meant because technically, Cameron is one of the best. I think Rivette is saying Cameron has no interesting "vision", which may be true, but it is a very weird way of expressing it.

Maybe he sees things in Cameron's films we don't see.

Jean Pierre Melville made a list of every important Hollywood pre war director. One film which enthused him was reason enough to be included, and the list has everyone, including Jack Conway, Norman Taurog or Richard Thorpe, but astonishingly he disliked everything from Raoul Walsh: "Believe me, Walsh is a poor director. It is sad to see how all the young people are at fault."

But then Melville was also a Frenchy, at least he did not call him an asshole.

Probably. Cameron isn't on my top 10 directors (one of his films is in my top 10, though). He has flaws. Many ones. That doesn't make Rivette's statement true, whatever he saw. It's plain false. And once again, his statement about Kate Winslet isn't false, it's stupid, mean and 100% off topic. D&D has the right to say such things, I don't understand how a respected director would think this is a good idea.

I just saw this thread for the first time.

A) Beart got her first injections in her lips in 1990. La belle noiseuse was released in 1991. Not certain if the injections were before or after she shot that film. But if you want to see her unblemished beauty, watch Manon of the Spring. She'll take your breath away.

B) I object to n_l implying that I'd make rude comments about women like Prevert made about Kate Winslet's weight. I) I always prefer curvy girls. Skinny girls are nasty. B) I only make such comments about women whom I know and you don't. Or about actresses who are dead. I'd never make such comments publicly about actresses who are alive. (The only exception is actresses who have armpit hair - those I'd bash loudly and hope they read this and buy a razor  )

It's one of the greatest films ever made, so of course you'd hate it.

I watched the first half of the film on blu last night and it does indeed look very good. Only 2 more hours to go!
