Quick update: lil brutto and I have gotten Kino the 35mm elements they needed to do a correct 1967 theatrical edit. Their new blu/uhd will have this edit. They want fans to vote on either having the extended or the theatrical in UHD on the Kino Lorber studio classics Facebook page.

Who knows if we'll ever find that page again, so I made a copy:

Some updates regarding our upcoming 4KUHD release of THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY:

NEW color grading was applied to BOTH the Extended version (4KUHD) and Theatrical International version (Blu-ray). The color grading will now be consistent between both versions of the film.

We also restored the 2.0 Mono audio, going back to the 1993 MGM laserdisc PCM monaural track.

Disc 2 (Blu-ray) ? Theatrical Cut
A 4K scan of a 1967 35mm IB tech print is the secondary source for approximately 10 seconds of content that is not present in the extended version of the film. This comprises of 5 shots total:

A) The optical flip ending in Tuco's neck back around the noose. (Timecode 01:24:13:03- 14 frames)

B) Tuco shoving the "Open/Closed" sign into the storekeeper's mouth. (Timecode 01:37:46:20- 5 seconds, 10 frames - this was cut short in the 2017 Kino theatrical version)

C) An extreme closeup on Blondie's eyes shortly before Tuco's gang comes barging through the door - features a hidden jump cut that is present on both the 35mm IB tech print and the Laserdisc release but not in the extended cut - (Timecode 01:41:54:15- 1 second, 14 frames- not present in the 2017 Kino theatrical version)

D) The fade up on Tuco and Blondie riding up to the mission after forcing him to walk through the desert (Timecode 02:02:45:19- 1 second, 3 frames- cut short in the 2017 Kino)

E) The tail of the shot of the train leaving the station. (Timecode 02:38:22:08- 2 seconds, 1 frame- cut short in the 2017 Kino)

Total Run Time: 02Hrs, 41Min, 57Sec

We also added the newly restored German Theatrical Trailer to our amazing list of extras - Courtesy of Jordan Krug and Benji Heran

And good on ya, Jordan Krug!

Happy to report that the German trailer came from this boards very own Mike Siegel. We provided it in 4K and it looks pretty nice. And every single shot in it is an alternate take, angle or deleted scene (same as the French trailer) but now its sharp as a tack. Thanks Mike!

Thanks, I hadn't ever seen this.  Interesting that the "restored" scene after leaving the mission - which I like a lot, and is really good at anti-war message - is shown in the German trailer.

I still think that the German title Zwei Glorreiche Halunken is ridiculous.

Play Me the Song of Death?  I like it.  I don't speak Italian, but somewhere I read that the Italian title translates more to "Once there was the West".  But "Once Upon a Time..." is how English-language fairy tales start.

I will tell you that in 1969 when this first played here in Arizona, I was NOT happy with the U.S. Title, but as years went by and I realized this was somewhat a fairy tale, and the subsequent release of the fairy tale "Once Upon a Time in America", I became OK with it.

I believe Frayling has said that the title in Italian translates to something like "Once Upon a Time, there was the West," rather than "Once Upon a Time in the West." But I am happy that the English title is the latter not the former. The former would sound ridiculous in English.

Once Upon a Time the West would be correct, I think. Sounds good for me.

The German title sounds great in German, less good when translated into English. It is a spectacular title, and it does make a lot of sense when connected to the death exhalation going through the harmonica, and of course as a description of the moaning melody Bronson plays.

Almost. I think if written out it would have to be: Once Upon a Time, the West. or Once Upon a Time . . . the West.

That would make it grammatically correct. But I tend to find punctuation signs in titles awkward at best, pompous at worst. It's hard enough to squeeze "..." in a full paragraph without making things painfully in your face, so I wouldn't even try in something shorter than a sentence.

If I understand this correctly, the shorter cut of the film will be in 4KUHD, and the longer one will be on a regular blu-ray:

Hugs to you Jordan, you are the only guy in the world I would have sold it to... (whywere you born? ;D )
Glad to see they finally "accepted" your input, which they did not for their "first release". Maybe
they didn't trust my opinion at that time, although I already had successfully co-produced 3 Peckinpah's
with KINO by then...

PS: 2 GLORREICHE HALUNKEN was Sergio's first title for the film as I recall. (TWO MAGNIFICENT ROGUES). Right?
