I'll try to watch clips from the show, I'm interested in what Soderbergh did with it.

I'll also try to watch a few 2020 movies since I've only seen Mank and the Sorkin, it's hard to comment on the result in these conditions. I have Nomadland on a hard drive somewhere. I really want to see Emma, lauded as the true masterpiece of the year by people I trust.

"One banana, two banana, three banana, four...."

« #6 : April 26, 2021, 06:06:00 AM »

Here's my thumbnail review of Nomadland from February:
Quote
Nomadland (2021) - 10/10. Chloe Zhao makes the film of the year and Francis McDormand heads for her next Oscar nom. McDormand plays Fern, a woman who has lost everything but her indomitable will, who dedicates herself to living the life of a modern American nomad, encountering, as she travels, a variety of like-minded people. The really interesting thing about the film is how like a documentary it is. To underscore this, all the characters are played by "actors" using their real names, and the film is filled with people who have never been on screen before. The story is subtle enough to fool many into thinking nothing much happens (and the basis for the film comes from a non-fiction book about the nomad sub-culture). The film eschews elaborate camera movements and instead uses very simple set-ups that do not call attention to themselves. This serves the movie by allowing the characters and locations to be the stars rather than the director (and scenes depicting Nevada, Nebraska, South Dakota, and the Northern California coast are a welcome change from the usual A-listers). Maybe we can finally toss all the bullshit artists in the film biz into the rubbish bin of history. Here's hoping Zhao's example will inspire a thousand similar films.

Here's what I had to say about Promising Young Woman in January. Given my comments, I'm not surprised to hear about the screenplay award:
Quote
Promising Young Woman (2020) - 9/10. The wife and I are big Carey Mulligan fans, so we took this in. I was leery in the beginning, though: it seemed the director was trying to blend a romcom with a revenge flick, requiring two incompatible tones. But as the story unfolded, with its many twists and reverses, it all came together very neatly. This has a really, really clever plot, maybe the best I've seen since the Tarantino/Roger Avary days. (I'm not sure why, but it also includes two separate references to Night of the Hunter.) Someone named Emerald Fennell both wrote and directed. IMDb tells me she's chiefly an actress in British television. She's obviously someone with a career worth following, which I shall do from now on.

In March I wrote this about The Father:
Quote
The Father (2021) - 9/10. Anthony Hopkins slowly--and then suddenly--going batty. A few years back, when this was a play on Broadway, Drink and I watched the impressive Frank Langella perform the title role. Hopkins may be better. The play was always cinematic, so this adaptation (directed by Florian Zeller, the man who wrote the play) works well. The story may be even better as a film: in the play we gradually understand that everything we see is a product of the old man's mind. The film on the other hand allows an occasional insight into the minds of the other characters, chiefly that of the old man's daughter. The story seems more complete that way. Still, a bit of a downer. But now with 6 Oscar noms!
I predicted Hopkins would win the Oscar for this. True, I only told my wife. But she remembers, and this morning I saw a strange new look of respect in her eyes.

I don?t need to kill Palestinians; they?re killing themselves! Many of the Palestinian deaths occurred from rockets that fell short  ;D ;D ;D
