Yes, it is a piece of crap.

Not commie like I assumed. But one of these "scholarly works" that are impossible to read. Does anyone (other than some nerdy film professor) actually have the ability to read and enjoy these things?

I avoid these academic treatises like the plague.
Ironically, Christopher Fraylings first book was an academic work ( his PHD iirc). But, he soon ditched academia, thankfully!
