Thanks. This is just the kind of thing the Sergio Leone Encyclopedia has been hungry for.

I read somewhere that the differences in cultures in the European countries had a big impact on which Leone films were more popular.

Like Italians preferred the Eastwood-Van Cleef partnership, Once-West more popular in Germany and France, etc.  Of course the Germans had to deal with "Zwei glorreiche Halunken", maybe the worst title ever !

Not a problem for Germans, they were used to worse titles, and westerns had always this kind of forgettable and interchangeable titles.

The success of OuTW would not happen today, it was a success over the years, and I assume that in the first year it had not much success. OuTW sold half of its 13 mio tickets between 1974 and 1976 and still 2,5 mio between 1980 and 1984, the year the VHS of it was released.
Now you can guess how many are left for 1969/70.

But it is interesting that GBU did not have this long lasting run.

This is really interesting. How do you account for it? Was there some kind of critical discourse that built the film's reputation, or was it all from word-of-mouth?

Word of mouth, definitely.

OuTW brought when released some more attention to Leone, but still got lots of negative reviews.
Apart from the Morricone music the German title helped very much. Despite being also a bad title compared to the original one, it just sounded great in Germany in combination with the eerie harmonica theme: Play Me the Song of Death. They even change the dub for this line, Fonda says it instead of "keep your loving brother happy" and then also Bronson when he puts the harmonica into Fonda's mouth. Actually this is so good, that it is so Leone-like, that it is hard to believe that it was made-up.
Another point was surely the sudden stardom of Bronson after Death Wish.

The reviews got more favourable over the years, but it needed quite some time before Leone became his recent status in the world of cinema.

I like the title better as "Spiel Mir das Lied vom Tod".

My guess is the "Once Upon a Time" was a tongue in cheek reminder as a fable/tale.  I remember on its USA release in 1969, we teenagers felt that title was awkward.

What you say about 1969 is no doubt true, but time has a way of changing things. Now we live in an age where "Once Upon a Time in . . . " as part of a title has become so common we have to give SL props for spotting the trend decades before everyone else. Yet another proof that SL's middle name (not Godard's) was "Cinema."

I like both titles. Now I'm going to get out my copy of OUATITW with the German dub just so I can hear Henry Fonda (Not) say "Spiel Mir das Lied vom Tod."

It could have been translated as Es war einmal im Westen or Es war einmal der Westen. Sounds good, but no chance in these years to release a commercial western with such an untypical title.

Of course then DYS followed with Todemelodie (Death Melody), and the first idea for OuTA was ... yes, yes, Spiel mir das Lied von Amerika. But meanwhile Leone had a name, and despite few knew about OuTWs original title the release company was brave enough to release it as Es war einmal in Amerika. And to release it uncut, and the film sold 2,33  mio tickets, quite good for a nasty and violent 4 hour film with FSK 18 and no hero.

I agree, I think even in English that Frank saying "Play me the song of death" to young Harmonica, and having that repeated years later by older Harmonica would've been even more classic than "keep your lovin' brother happy".
