Well I finally rectified not seeing the 1994 remake. I wasn't expecting too much but was pleasantly surprised. I knew it was Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger taking the place of McQueen and MacGraw but didn't realize that the rest of the cast was a future all star line up. James Woods excepted Michael Madsen, Jennifer Tilly, Richard Farnsworth and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The others David Morse and James Stephens are OK. Some sequences are a bit more fleshed (wink, wink) out.

Director Roger Donaldson since he was making almost a shot by shot remake of Peckinpah couldn't screw it up too bad. I give it an 8/10

The editing wasn't much different from the original that I could tell.

As I said elsewhere I recently read and re-read (as in this case) most of Thompson's novels. So I gave a try to the movies as well. Probably cj remembers little (as I did) of Sam's movie, which is head and shoulder above this one. The only things that might be better here are Basinger (easy win: McGraw was in business we know why), maybe Woods on Johnson (who's not as slimy as the part requires. But sure looks more Texan than Woods) and, debatably, the shooting in the hotel, though marred as in Sam's by the decision of Baldwin not to kill Marsden the first time. But for the rest is hard to say that Roger's compares with Sam's. Just take the main actors: Baldwin is nothing short of embarrassing: as inexpressive as can be. And Marsden? Lettieri just has to show his face to exhudes threat, Marsden apart from his long hair, doesn't look frightening at all. But a scene by scene analysys would show easily how Sam did an very good job while Roger just went through Hollywood routine. 6/10
