Something has boggled me since I first seen OUATITW.

Was Cheyenne on Morton's train and was rescued by his gang or was he put on a prison train, rescued and then him and his gang hijacked Morton's train?

If he was on Morton's train, why?

A lot of times a special car (Morton's) is hooked to a regularly schedualed train. Or maybe not, I'd have to pop in the scene where Frank gets back to the train to see if there are any more cars hooked on. Anyway his gang rescued him, there would have been no prison trains, so it was either Mortons or a regular train, that would be my guess.

Well! When Cheyenne is escorted to the train, only 2 of his gang members board with him: 2 tickets to the next station... I always thought that these 2 rescued him and not the whole gang.
Now, how and where Morton and Cheyenne meet up, is not well explained in the film, IMHO.
Cheyenne is mortaly wounded, and returns to Sweetwater alone.
Does this mean his gang was wiped out in the shootout and Cheyenne is the sole survivor with Morton for a few hour$ more? Probably, because one of the themes of the film is the death of the old west.

The two that boarded the train probably stopped it for the rest of the gang somewhere along the tracks, there are plenty of dead bodies around when Frank reaches the train. That whole sequence is just implied, for us to make our own assumptions so it would most likely be the senario that fits the facts as they are presented.
