Some more John Alton on Blu-ray:

He Walked By Night is a great, great noir. I hope they add a nice commentary or something like that.

First up, on September 3, is Framed (1947).

Wow.

I JUST bought the MGM DVD. It's out of print and used copies are very expensive, but I finally found someone on amazon.co.uk selling it pretty cheaply (less than $20 including shipping to USA). It has no bonus features but the image quality is very good. The movie is very good. Now we'll have to see about double-dipping ...

The poster was a nice surprise, I didn't realize until I opened the package there would be a poster with it (it also has a Secret Beyond The Door poster on the other side). I switched the individual releases to their reverse/original cover art, the new cover art is pretty cool & stylish but also very Saul Bass inspired (like the box & booklet), which doesn't really fit the movies too well.

I've never seen The Secret Behind The Door

Not a classic, nowhere near pure noir, and far from Fritz Lang's best American movie but I have a soft spot for it (I already have the French blu-ray).

If you can buy into the farfetched story and don't mind a miscast Michael Redgrave, it's a really atmospheric movie with beautiful cinematography (Stanley Cortez, 'Night Of The Hunter') and set design, with an almost Edgar Allen Poe-like feel to it. Joan Bennett is great, and her semi-whispered narration works really well with the overall weird gothic/spooky feel of the movie.

Noir Alley will be off the next two weeks, presumably for holiday programming. Returning January 7 with the loser George Raft in Red Light.

Red lite is probably his Best Noir, BTW.
