I was afraid of that ...

Actually I don't like The Great Escape either. Not as bad as the Eagles Bore, but also not that much entertainment in there. Similar to Mag 7 a film beneath its potential, and a disappointment from a director like Sturges, who made so many better films, especially westerns.

So there's a big gap between Cross of Iron and the Escape, and an even bigger one between the Escape and the Eagles. These 2 are also films which make me think that Convoy is comparatively a masterpiece ...

Here's how it goes for me:

"Cross of Iron": The best technically--hands down. This is one well-made flick
"Great Escape": Really moving story. I don't usually care much for actors, but this has some great ones all in the same movie.
"Where Eagles Dare: Mindless entertainment and thoroughly enjoyable

So maybe, Stanton and I aren't that far apart in our opinions after all...
