actually, the correct title is "Ballad of A Soldier"
as with other tracks, the Italian translation on the soundtrack was literal
not idiomatic.*

Like the track 'The Strong'. This is a mistaken translation of il Fort, which should have meant fortress or castle - the place where all of the injured Confederate soldiers are dying

It’s almost as if there were several different countries in Europe.

It varies from country to country. Here in Germany a ballad is sort of a song based on a poem, also a story of a special person or event (as in THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE ) .
In France a lot of old dance music is labeled as "ballade", also in classical music (mainly piano, remember Richard Clayderman's "Ballade pour Adeline" ? Tortured us to no end 40 years ago. Of course the first thing I learned on the piano back then ).
